HMC/CAH created to renew rural hospitals

Who is HMC/CAH Consoli­dated Inc., and why would the Kansas City-based company want to build a state-of-the-art, for-profit hospital in Hillsboro?

That was the multi-million-dollar question company president Larry Arthur addressed head-on during the special city council meeting last Wednesday prior to the council’s decision to accept the offer to acquire the assets of Hillsboro Community Medical Center.

Hillsboro city to subsidize welding program

The Hillsboro City Council decided at a special meeting Friday, June 20, to subsidize an effort to bring a welding-training program to the community.

The council agreed to spend up to $40,000 to make renovations at the former AMPI building, which the city owns, primarily to install the ventilation system required for a welding program.

The program is being initiated by Butler County Com­munity College, according to Mayor Delores Dalke, at the request of local trailer manufacturers who need...

County OKs Marion deal for jail land

The Marion County Commission Monday voted 3-0 to pay the City of Marion $80,000 for the acreage needed to build a new jail in Batt Industrial Park, with the city to install a connecting street and utilities.

The deal, as outlined in a letter from the Marion City Council to the commission, is contingent upon voters passing of bond proposal for the corrections center in the November election.

The city also offered the land free to the county if the county would install street and utilities...

"Enough's Enough" / Dahl makes late decision not to seek re-election

Don Dahl said he decided to not to seek re-election as 70th District state representative because during the recent legislative session fellow lawmakers in Topeka seemed more interested in short-term political gains than the long-term economic well-being of the state.

“Finally, I just sort of said enough’s enough,” said Dahl, a Republican from Hillsboro who also had served as speaker pro tem during his last two terms.
