  • Marion library hosts its 4th annual tour

    KBATreblemakers2 The KBA Treblemakers performs Saturday night during the sixth annual Bluegrass at the Lake event at Marion County Park and Lake. This was the first year for the event to be held both Friday and Saturday nights. About 100 people attended Friday, and 300 attended Saturday, according to Steve Hudson, Marion County Lake superintendent.

    Now in its fourth season, Marion City Library’s Flower in the Flint Hills Garden Tour is scheduled from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday, June 29, with three locations in town and one at the county lake.

    Those places include 115 N. Elm St., 201 N. Coble, 412 S. Thorp and 48 Lakeshore Drive.

    In addition to touring the garden spots, Janet Marler, library director, is inviting everyone to stop by the facility for refreshments and a tour.

Peabody vet led battle to recognize atomic veterans

GaryThornton768 Gary Thornton holds the poster identifying the “Atomic Veterans Memorial Highway” that was dedicated in 2009 near his home in Leon. Thornton, who still calls Peabody his hometown, was an unsuspecting guinea pig for the government’s secret nuclear tests in the early 1960s. He became a leading proponent in Kansas for formal recognition of the service atomic veterans rendered. When Gary Thornton was called to active duty in the U.S. Naval Reserve in September 1961, only months after his graduation from Peabody High School, he knew he would see the world and that he might find himself in harm’s way someday.

An uphill effort to raise money for Marion schools

Haven for hurting horses

AmyBayesGreenwood252 Amy Bayes, founder of Greenwood Stables & Equine Rescue near Peabody, strokes the head of Teddy Bear, a Yellow Belgian she is rehabilitating with hope of finding him an adoptive home. With changing colors and falling leaves heralding the approach of winter, Amy Bayes wonders about the welfare of the dependents entrusted into her care.

Husband Kelly, and children Saje, Ryan and Isaac will be fine, of course. But Amy has her eye on the dozen horses that look to her for their well-being as borders at Greenwood Stables & Equine Rescue, a cause she incorporated this summer on the family farmyard south of Peabody.

Mission possible: Trojans repeat as 3A state champs

The Hillsboro High School volleyball team earned its second consecutive Class 3A state championship Saturday with a sweep of Garden Plain in the finals at the Bicentennial Center in Salina. It was the first time Hillsboro has won back-to-back titles in volleyball—adding to the spirit of celebration, as depicted in these photos.

Best-selling author Philip Yancey will be the featured speaker at “Seasons of the Soul,” a lecture hosted by Tabor College at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 9, at Hillsboro Mennonite Breth­ren Church, 300 Prairie Pointe.

Doors will open at 7 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.
