Time to step up for local businesses

Attention: open in a new window. PDFPrintE-mail

Our local businesses need your business now more than they ever have—and I am not kidding. You have probably heard this from me a hundred times before. This time I am not suggesting—I am pleading for you to consider making purchases from your friends and neighbors right here at home.

If you think it always costs more to shop locally, then think again. When there are fewer people in our county to pay the bills, then your bill goes up. Less money to fix the streets, less money to support your causes when you or your children come around to local businesses asking for donations.

Has your local merchant always earned your business? Probably not every time, but what if one day they aren’t here when you need them?

If every household...

Buildings spring up all over

Buildings have been springing up all over Hillsboro in the past few months. Midway Motors is building a new dealership in the new Hillsboro Business Park, which is happening as a new street is being completed to access it.

Midlands Farm Services is building its new office building right across the street from the new CarQuest building in Hillsboro Heights.

Plus if you want to start a new church or move your existing one, the Baptist church on the east side of town is now for sale. Or someone with creativity could transform it into a single-family residence, which has been done in places elsewhere.

You just don’t see builders or investors building spec homes in rural communities anymore. Without that type of activity in the...

High hopes with start of football

If you are a football fan, this fall will be a great time to be alive. I’m excited about the return of Mike Gardner at Tabor College and with the arrival of Turner Gill and his new staff at KU. I have all but dismissed the Kansas City Chiefs and don’t plan on watching much of them.

With Bill Snyder in his second year back at K-State, I wouldn’t be surprised if they have great success. And it’s a good thing that one of our own, Wade Weibert, is leading the charge on the offensive line.

Now, if I could just get my HD TV back to working like it should. One month after the warranty expired, our HDMI module went on the fritz, at least that’s my diagnosis. Since I paid for it with a credit card, I do have an additional year...

We should preserve past stories

As I get older, the more interest I have in what it was like in our geographical area before I was here and when I was too young to remember it.

I think it would be a good thing to hold some informal gatherings around the county to bring some of our seasoned citizens together to reminisce about what went on in the early days.

Virgil Litke stopped in one day and shed some light on the early days of the county fair. He described a contest held during the fair in the early ’30s while he was in high school. The contest was judged on the overall look of the horse and rider. He took third place and showed me the ribbon he won.

He motioned out the front door of the office and said there were at least 100 horses and contestants lined up on...

Seedless melons are the best

I was told last week that seedless watermelons were developed by a Mennonite who attended Goshen College.

In my research I was not able to get to the bottom of it and find a name. At any rate, I am thankful for seedless watermelon.

And I really don’t eat watermelon unless it is cut up. Then if the seeds are taken out, it makes it even better.

When we picked up Amy and George at the airport last week I was hoping we hadn’t parked in the short-term lot long enough to owe anything. I believe a stay of 30 minutes or less is free.

When I handed the parking attendant my ticket, she ran it through the machine and said, “No charge.”

I don’t know why, but I blurted that I wanted a receipt. She gave me a look like I haven’t...
