Wheelchair travel forms bond between native and visitor 
When Ryan Chalmers, 24, arrived in Newton on Saturday, it marked the 35th day of his 71-day journey across America in his racing wheelchair.
Although Chalmers planned to continue through Marion County on Saturday, Torey Hett of Marion asked if he might consider staying until Sunday morning and take part in the Challenge Games at Derby.
Like Hett, Chalmers also was born with spina bifida, which is an incomplete closure of the spinal column, and means they do not have complete use of their legs.
With Chalmers averaging 60 to 70 miles a day since starting his journey April 6, one of the first questions Hett asked Chalmers was if he became sore traveling those distances.
“He told me the first week he was, but that now he is getting used to it,” Hett said.

Warriors split games at Ell-Saline

The Warriors split their games at Ell-Saline Tuesday. The girls fell, 47-30, to the Cardinals, while the boys defeated Ell-Saline, 38-23, in another low-scoring game.
GIRLS – The Warriors hung with the home team in the opening quarter, taking a 4-2 lead when Kelli Hess drained a three-point basket at 3:19. Three points by Katey Ehrlich in the last 1:21 contributed to a 7-6 Marion lead at the end of the first period. Although another Ehrlich basket with 5:38 left in the second period again gave the Warriors a narrow advantage, 9-8, it would be Marion’s last lead, as the Cardinals surged 8-0, and finished the half on top, 20-14.
The Cardinals broke loose after the half, scoring off a Warrior turnover for a 25-15 double-digit lead at the 6:16 mark. Marion managed only three free throws in the first four minutes until Hess scored at 3:23 for a 28-19 Cardinal margin. Ell-Saline’s full-court pressure plagued the Warriors, and the quarter ended with a 37-21 Cardinal lead. Ehrlich, Megan Richmond and Erin Meierhoff each scored a basket for Marion in the final period, and Hess polished off the Warrior scoring with three points from the charity stripe, but the Cardinals held a 17-point lead when the final buzzer sounded.
Hess and Richmond led the Warriors with eight points each.
BOYS – In another low-scoring game, the Warriors again looked to defense to propel them to the win Tuesday night. Missed shots abounded in the first quarter, with the game’s first points coming halfway through the period when Zach Robson drained a three-point basket. Jordan Hett scored with 1:20 left on the clock for a 5-0 Marion lead, and Ell-Saline got on the board with a three-point play with 40 seconds left for a 5-3 score at the end of the first period.
Marion turned up the heat in the second quarter, draining four baskets from behind the arc. Robson opened with a three-point basket at 6:45 for an 8-3 Marion lead, and Taylor Heidebrecht pushed the lead to 10-3 with 6:00 left before half. Robson nailed a wide-open three-pointer at 3:52, and Jordan Hett and Ethan Hett scored for a double-digit 17-7 Marion lead with 1:44 left in the half. The half ended with back-to-back threes by Austin Pedersen and Ethan Hett, boosting Marion to a 23-7 halftime advantage.
After intermission, the Cardinals scored two points from the charity stripe at the 4:34 mark and did not score again until eight seconds remained in the third quarter. Meanwhile, Jordan Hett and Jacob Harper scored seven points for the Warriors for a 30-11 advantage going into the final quarter. Ell-Saline outscored the Warriors 12-8 in the final period, but Marion claimed the 15-point victory.
Jordan Hett led the Warrior attack with 13 points.
Coming—The Warriors host Bennington for Homecoming Friday, with the girls scheduled to tipoff at 6 p.m., followed by the boys at 7:30.
