Wheelchair travel forms bond between native and visitor

When Ryan Chalmers, 24, arrived in Newton on Saturday, it marked the 35th day of his 71-day journey across America in his racing wheelchair.

Although Chalmers planned to continue through Marion County on Saturday, Torey Hett of Marion asked if he might consider staying until Sunday morning and take part in the Challenge Games at Derby.

Like Hett, Chalmers also was born with spina bifida, which is an incomplete closure of the spinal column, and means they do not have complete use of their legs.

With Chalmers averaging 60 to 70 miles a day since starting his journey April 6, one of the first questions Hett asked Chalmers was if he became sore traveling those distances.

“He told me the first week he was, but that now he is getting used to it,” Hett said.

Hillsboro sweeps Lyons in third matchup of the year

It was the third time the two schools have squared off this season, but this one had league implications as well. The Trojan girls, ranked No. 3 in Class 3A, roared to a 43-7 halftime lead, then cruised to a 63-38 victory to stay atop the Central Kansas League with a 4-0 record and improve to 14-1 for the season.

The boys, meanwhile, finished with a 19-11 fourth quarter that catapulted them to a 57-43 win against the Lions. Hillsboro, coming off a heart-breaking loss to Sterling earlier in the week, improved to 3-1 in league play and 9-6 for the season.

GIRLS - An argument could made that this game already was decided in the first quarter. The Trojans, behind 11 point from Addie Lackey, sprinted to a 17-2 lead by the first break.

Picking up where they left off in a blistering fourth quarter of shooting against Sterling, Hillsboro shot lights-out for the entire first half, making 17 of 23 shots (74 precent) from the floor and all four of its free throws on the way to a 43-7 bulge by intermission. Lackey accumulated 19 of her game-high 22 points by that time.

Not that it mattered much, but the second half actually went to Lyons, 31-20, as the visitors found considerably more success getting their shots to drop. Hillsboro led, 55-20, after three quarters, which kicked in the continuous clock for the entire final period. Coach Nathan Hiebert pulled his starters with about 6:30 to play and Hillsboro leading, 57-27.

For the game, Hillsboro finished with 58 percent shooting (25-43), including six for eight from three-point range. The defense limited Lions (2-2, 9-5) to 31 percent shooting for the game after a 13 percent shooting performance in the first half.

BOYS - After splitting their first two matchups this season, this game was the rubber-match as well as for league standings. Lyons took an early 7-3 lead, but by the end of the first quarter the Trojans led 14-11 and never trailed again. A three-pointer by Brett Weinbrenner in the final two seconds of the first half bumped the lead to 28-22 by intermission.

The game continued on a give-and-take course through the third period. A deep three-pointer from Tyler Proffitt with 54 seconds restored Hillsboro’s lead to six points, 38-32, when the quarter ended.

The fourth quarter was Hillsboro’s best, particularly the first four minutes. Moving the ball exceptionally well on offense, Hillsboro launched a 9-0 run capped by a three-pointer from Weinbrenner at the 5:19 mark. Meanwhile, the defense forced five Lion turnovers and three missed shots to claim a 47-32 bulge at the halfway point.

Lyons then got back-to-back threes from a pair of players off the bench to slice the lead to nine points. But 8-for-8 free-throw shooting over a minute’s time -- two from Harry Faber and six straight from Weinbrenner -- derailed any further comeback by the visiting team.

Weinbrenner finished as the game’s high scorer with 20 points on 5-for-11 shooting. Shaq Thiessen broke double figures with 12 despite a below-normal 6-for-15 shooting night. As a team, the Trojans made 49 percent of their shots (21-43) while limiting Lyons to 33 percent (14-42). Grady Kirkhardt led Lyons (1-3, 5-9) with 15 points.
