Marion teams drop games at Moundridge

The first games of the new year proved disappointing for the Marion High School basketball teams with losses to Moundridge Friday. The Marion girls dropped a 49-13 decision to the Wildcats to move to 0-2 in the Heart of America league, 2-6 overall. The Marion boys suffered their first loss of the season, falling 57-48 to move to 1-1, 7-1.

GIRLS - The Marion girls struggled to put points on the board in Friday’s league contest at Moundridge, dropping a 49-13 decision. Plagued by turnovers and struggling on offense, the Warriors faced a scoreless first period to go into the second quarter trailing by 17.

Katey Ehrlich scored Marion’s first points to open the second quarter, but Moundridge went on a 7-0 run before Megan Richmond broke the streak with two shots from the free-throw line with 5:09 left in the half. Kelli Hess cashed in a basket at the 2:21 mark, and Ericka Herzet sank two from the charity line with under one minute remaining before halftime, but the Warriors came up on the short end of a 33-8 score at the break.

Megan Richmond scored three points in the third quarter for the Warriors, and Briana Hall added the Warrior’s final basket of the night with 1:10 remaining in the third, while Moundridge continued to build its lead to 47-13 at the end of three. A running clock was put into effect to start the fourth quarter, and Moundridge scored the final quarter’s sole basket at 1:19 to seal the victory.

BOYS – Hopes of an undefeated season fell flat for the Marion boys Friday night. On the road facing Heart of America league rival Moundridge, the Warriors came up on the short end by a 57-48 margin.

The Warriors opened the game with a 3-0 advantage courtesy of a Jacob Harper free throw and consecutive basket by Jordan Hett, and twice extended their lead to four points, but Moundridge soon took the reigns, finishing the first period with an 11-0 run to take a 16-9 lead.

Not to go down without a fight, the Warriors opened the second period with a 7-0 streak to tie the game at 16 after Harper nailed a shot from the behind the arc with 5:47 before half. The Warriors again tied the game at 18, but when time expired in the half, Marion trailed 28-24.

The Warriors came out after halftime to post back-to-back shots by Harper and Hett to take a 29-28 lead with 7:01 left in the third period, but it would be the Warriors’ final lead of the night as Moundridge surged to the nine-point victory. Hett contributed 11 of the Warriors’ 17 fourth quarter points, but the effort was not enough to overcome the Moundridge lead.
