HHSgbMarionMaddi659 Hillsboro's Maddi Duerksen looks to pass inside during the first half against Marion   HHSgbMarionAlex679 Hillsboro's Alex Ratzlaff shoots for two of her season-high 13 points. Undefeated teams remained that way at the end of the pre-holiday showdown between Hillsboro and Marion Friday in Marion. The 7-0 Trojan girls, ranked No. 1 in Class 3A, rolled to a 59-12 win over the Warriors while the 7-0 Marion boys, ranked No. 6 in 3A, defeated Hillsboro, 58-49.

GIRLS - Hillsboro scored the first 12 points of the game and never looked back in their easy victory over the 2-5 Warriors. The score was 19-4 after the first quarter and 35-7 at halftime. Hillsboro shot about 38 percent from the floor, but put up nearly three times as many shots that Marion, who turned the ball over 19 times in the first two quarters against Hillsboro’s pressure defense. Addie Lackey fueled the offense with 12 points by the break.

With Lackey and Tena Loewen accounting for 14 of Hillsboro’s 16 points in the third quarter, the Trojans pushed the margin to 51-10, prompting a running clock in the final period.

Lackey finished as the game’s top scorer with 21 points, with Alex Ratzlaff tossing in a season high 13 and Loewen adding 11. As a team the Trojans made 23 of 52 shots from the floor (44 percent) and eight of 19 free throws while Marion made four of only 18 shots from the floor (22 percent) and four of 12 free throws.

BOYS - The Warriors used a red-hot third quarter to turn the tide of their game with the Trojans. Marion led 12-11 after one quarter, but an 8-0 surge to start the second quarter helped the Trojans to a 24-20 lead at halftime.

But the Warriors quickly grabbed momentum in the second half on consecutive baskets by Jacob Harper and Jordan Hett to tie the game 23 seconds into the third period. After Hillsboro’s Josh Wiebe scored with 3:42 left, Harper cashed in a traditional three-point play to launch a 10-Marion run for a 43-34 lead in the final seconds. But when Austin Pedersen fouled Brett Weinbrenner on a three-point shot with 0.1 seconds left in the quarter, the Trojan junior cashed in all three charity shots to make the score 43-37 at the break. Marion made nine of 12 shots from the field during the quarter while Hillsboro managed only four of 11.

In the final period, Marion iced the victory at the free-throw line, connecting on 11 of 13 charity opportunities. Jordan Hett made all eight of his attempts to finish as the game’s top scorer with 24 points. Harper finished with 21. For Hillsboro, Weinbrenner scored 16 and Thiessen added 14 to pace the Trojans (3-4).
