Wheelchair travel forms bond between native and visitor 
When Ryan Chalmers, 24, arrived in Newton on Saturday, it marked the 35th day of his 71-day journey across America in his racing wheelchair.
Although Chalmers planned to continue through Marion County on Saturday, Torey Hett of Marion asked if he might consider staying until Sunday morning and take part in the Challenge Games at Derby.
Like Hett, Chalmers also was born with spina bifida, which is an incomplete closure of the spinal column, and means they do not have complete use of their legs.
With Chalmers averaging 60 to 70 miles a day since starting his journey April 6, one of the first questions Hett asked Chalmers was if he became sore traveling those distances.
“He told me the first week he was, but that now he is getting used to it,” Hett said.

HHS girls win tourney title; HHS boys lose to Lyons

The Hillsboro girls claimed the championship of the Moundridge Preseason Tournament Friday with a comfortable 51-28 victory over Lyons to complete a three-game sweep. The Hillsboro boys, however, suffered through another tough shooting night and lost to Lyons 41-35 to finish at 1-2.
GIRLS - Hillsboro and Lyons came into the contest each with a 2-0 tournament record, making the game a true championship showdown in the round-robin format. The Trojans quickly demonstrated their superiority over the Lions, pushing to a 17-2 lead after one quarter.
Hillsboro bumped the lead to 16 by halftime at 26-10 with six players contributing points during the first half. The Trojans removed any doubt of the game’s outcome with an 11-0 run to start the second half for a 37-10 lead. Lyons recovered to outscore Hillsboro 8-4 through the end of the quarter and cut the deficit to 23 points at 41-18.
But with a 7-1 run to start the final quarter, Hillsboro substituted deep into the bench and cruised to the 23-point win. Danae Bina led HHS with 17 points, including seven in the first three minutes of the final period and 13 for the second half.
BOYS - The Trojans got off to a solid start against the Lions, and when Shaq Thiessen drained three consecutive shots late in the first quarter, Hillsboro enjoyed an 11-8 lead. But Lyons’ Ryan McClure hit a three-pointer with 13 seconds left to tie the game at 11 at the first break.
Brett Weinbrenner started the second quarter with two free throws and a basket in the first 34 seconds for a 15-11 Hillsboro lead. But the road got suddenly bumpy for the Trojans, who made only seven of 32 field-goal attempts (22 percent) the rest of the game and committed uncharacteristic lapses on both ends of the court.
Despite the struggle, the Trojans somehow remained in the hunt until the final buzzer. By the end of the second quarter, Lyons led 23-20. Weinbrenner hit a three-pointer midway through the quarter to tie the game at 27, but Lyons poked ahead by the end of the quarter, 33-30.
The fourth quarter was agony for HHS. The Trojans made only two of 11 shots and committed five turnovers. Lyons built a 39-33 lead and then hung on to the end.
Thiessen, who experienced his first off shooting night of the season, still finished as the Trojans’ top scorer with 11 points. Weinbrenner was right behind with 10.
Hillsboro will play at Halstead next Tuesday and Lyons on Friday.
