Tabor President Jules Glanzer and Associate Athletic Director Amy Ratzlaff look on. The award, presented during Tabor’s annual sports banquet, will be given annually to the conference school with the greatest cumulative performance over the three athletic seasons.

Tabor College has earned the inaugural KCAC Commissioner’s Cup for its athletic achievements during the 2012-13 school year.

“It’s exciting, it’s fun,” said Rusty Allen, Tabor vice president of athletics. “One of the things we had set as our goal was to finish in the top three of this every year, and so in the inaugural year to win it, we feel like we’ve accomplished a lot.”

The award—designed to recognize the accomplishments of student-athletes and the KCAC schools they represent—will be given annually to the school with the greatest overall performance throughout the three athletic seasons, based on points.

“Many of our peer conferences have a similar award,” said KCAC Commissioner Scott Crawford. “To align ourselves with those conferences, but also to highlight excellence at the athletic-department level, we moved forward with this award last spring knowing our first recipient would be recognized in spring 2013.”

HHSgbInmanTena319 Tena Loewen drrives the baselline during a first in which she score 18 points for the Trojans.   The Hillsboro basketball teams split their games Thursday with Inman on the second night of the Moundridge Preseason Tournament. The Trojan girls won in a rout, 55-21, while the boys rallied late but dropped a 47-44 decision to the Teutons.

GIRLS - The Trojans came out energized on both ends of the court and simply dominated the Teutons from the start. Hillsboro jumped to a 23-4 lead by the end of one quarter as Inman turned the ball over 10 of its 19 possession against the Hillsboro pressure.

By halftime, Hillsboro pushed the margin to 39-11. Tena Loewen scored all of her team-high 18 points in the first half and Addie Lackey added eight.

The theme continued into the third quarter with Hillsboro building a 35-point margin by the end of it, 52-17. The final quarter was played with a running clock.

Lackey scored four points in the second half to finish with 12 for the night and Danae Bina chipped in nine as the Trojans improved to 2-0.

BOYS - Shooting difficulties ultimately undermined Hillsboro’s night of no-quit hustle as the Trojan absorbed their first loss of the season against an Inman team with quickness and size.

Hillsboro established a 7-4 lead midway through the opening quarter, but a 7-2 surge by Inman settled into an 11-11 tie at the end of the first quarter when Hillsboro’s Harry Faber hit two free throws with 0.1 seconds remaining. By halftime, Inman had built a lead of 27-21 with Hillsboro making only four of 14 shots form the floor during the second period.

The Teutons seemed on the verge of a knockout when a 7-2 run to start the second half had Hillsboro facing an 11-point deficit at 34-23. When the score hit 36-26 with 5:23 left in the quarter, the Trojans suddenly shut down the Teuton attack the rest of the quarter. Even so, Inman was still leading by eight points at 36-28 with Hillsboro struggling for points. Thiessen then scored twice within 13 seconds after two steals to pull HHS to within four points at the final break.

When Thiessen drained a three-pointer in the opening seconds of the fourth quarter, Hillsboro was within a point. The Trojans actually regained a brief lead at 44-43 when Thiessen hit a 15-footer with 1:15 left in the game. It turned out to be the last basket Hillsboro could manage, going 0-for-3 in the final minute while Inman added two free throws with 17 second to go. The game ended with Hillsboro at its end of the floor with 3.8 seconds to go and down by three. Faber’s attempt at a harried three-pointer fell short as the buzzer sounded.

Thiessen finished with 22 points and Weinbrenner with 11.

The Hillsboro teams will finish tournament play against Lyons on Friday. The girls will play at 4 p.m. and the boys at 5:30.
