Turn off TV week at Hillsboro library
In honor of TV Turnoff Week from April 22 to April 28, Hillsboro Public Library has a bulletin board in the City Building with ideas of what to do with the television off.
Stop by the library and fill out a coupon letting us know what you like to do instead of watching television. Take a look at the fact sheets about the effects of television on reading, schoolwork and more.
Fund-raising supper at Goessel center
A barbecue pork supper, catered by Bob and Connie Boese will be served at 6 p.m. Friday, April 27, at the Goessel Senior Center.
The fund-raiser will also feature music by Ann Dunn, violinist, and Wanda Ratzlaff, pianist. Cost is by donation.

Card shower request for McLinden’s 90th
Roseva McLinden will celebrate her 90th birthday Saturday, April 28.
Roseva Melson of Burns was married to Bud McLinden of Cedar Point in St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Florence. They lived on the McLinden Ranch southeast of Marion for more than 60 years before moving to Marion in 1999. Bud died in 2002.
They have a son, Dick and Patty of Marion; two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Event to remember Roland Dirksen
A remembrance service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 28, at the Goessel Mennonite Church for Roland Dirksen.
He died Nov. 27, 2006.
Birthday Bash for The Hub April 28
The Hub in Peabody will hold its one-year Birthday Bash from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, April 28, at 118 N. Walnut.
The bash will include refreshments and the acoustic stylings of Peabody’s own Zach Dameron.
The Hub, a non-profit teen center, is celebrating one year of entertainment, including more than 150 special events for the area youth and for Marion County Communities in Schools, Marion County Interlocal Agency, church groups, Boy Scouts, FCCLA and other school events.
The Hub is also available for rent to business agencies and for private birthdays, showers and graduation parties.

Church offers pizza and bluegrass music
First Mennonite Church, Hillsboro, is inviting the public to a family pizza and bluegrass gospel evening beginning at 6:30 p.m. Sunday, April 29.
A musical package called Gospel Hill & Friends will include a variety of performing groups and individuals.
Participants are asked to contribute $5 per adult and $4 for children age 12 and under to cover the cost of the pizza. Any remaining funds would go toward developing a playground on the church campus.
Card shower request for Boese’s 90th
The family of Alvin Boese of Lehigh will celebrate his 90th birthday with a dinner Sunday, April 29.
He was born April 29, 1917, to Abraham L. and Maria Schroeder Boese. He graduated from Goessel High School and attended Bethel College. On Sept. 9, 1946, he married Audrey Unruh.
They have four children, Anita of Hillsboro, Alan and Sharon of Lehigh, Ama and Murray Reimer of Hutchinson and Aileen and David Esau of Hillsboro; and seven grandchildren.

HES fifth grade to present musical
The Hillsboro Elementary School fifth grade will present the musical “On the Radio” at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 1, in the high-school auditorium.
The program includes oldies, goodies and all the songs that kids have loved in the years from the Depression through disco.
The public is invited to attend.
Hillsboro MB plans bake sale May 5
The music committee and choir of the Hillsboro Mennonite Brethren Church will host a bake sale at 8 a.m. Saturday, May 5, at the site of the church offices at 132 N. Main.
Proceeds will go toward the Organ Fund.
Program honors ESU student
Christina Hansen of Marion recently was named a Collegiate All-American Scholar by the U.S. Achievement Academy.
USAA established the Collegiate All-American Scholar award to recognize superior students who excel in academic disciplines. To qualify, students must earn a 3.3 or higher grade point average.
Hansen, who attends Emporia State University, will appear in the Collegiate All-American Yearbook, a national publication.
Hansen is the mother of Tylor and Rachel Neil.
Centre plant sale set for April 28
The Centre High School plant sale is scheduled for 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturday, April 28.
A variety of plants will be available.
