Threshing Days set for this weekend

The 39th annual Country Threshing Days in Goessel begins at noon Friday, Aug. 3, with large engine start-ups, pedal tractor drawing and more.

On Aug. 4, gates open at 8 a.m. with the parade beginning at 10 a.m. downtown. Other activities include ceramic and glass bead-making demonstrations and plowing and field demonstrations, to name a few.

Children’s activities continue Aug. 5 at Uncle Milt’s Shed with China painting, an antique-tractor pull, sawmill and threshing.

During the three-day event, more than 100 exhibitors from a seven-state area will have displays, antique equipment related to farming and more.

Picnic to raise funds for Harvey House

The Florence Historical Society will host its annual “Picnic on the Lawn” at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 4, at the Harvey House Museum located at 3rd and Marion streets, Florence.

The public is invited to enjoy a meal of fried fish, mountain oysters, salads and desserts, with donations going to support the museum. People are encouraged to bring lawn chairs.

Museum plans Aug. 5 dedication

Mennonite Heritage & Agri­cul­ture Museum in Goessel will dedicate the new addition to its Turkey Red Wheat Palace at 3 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 5,

The space doubles the size of the original building, built in 1974. The old and new structures share a wall and together cover about one-fourth acre of ground.

The new addition provides room for the display of several artifacts previously in storage in area barns and sheds for a number of years. Most artifacts on display are agriculture-related.

The Wheat Palace also is the permanent home of the Wheat Straw Liberty Bell, created by Goessel area Mennonites for the Smithsonian Institution’s U.S. Bicentennial display in 1976-78.

The dedication program will include an open house. Lemon­ade and cookies will be served.

Book group will meet Aug. 13

Hillsboro Public Library’s book discussion group will meet at 9:30 a.m. Monday, Aug. 13 at the Hillsboro Senior Center.

The group will discuss the book “The Tiger’s Wife” by Tea Obrecht. Copies of the book and discussion questions are available at the library.

Meeting set for TC child auditions

An informational meeting about children participating in Tabor College’s homecoming musical, “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dream­coat,” is planned for 6:30 p.m., Aug. 7, in the Lohrenz Chapel-Auditorium.

Boys and girls who are entering grades two through six are invited to audition.

Children should bring one or both parents/guardians to the Aug. 7 meeting.

Instructions and a sign-up sheet for auditions will be available at the meeting. Auditions will take place the evenings of Aug. 14 and 16. Following auditions, six to eight kids will be selected.

Public performances of “Joseph” are scheduled for Oct. 4-7.

NAMI group plans Aug. 2 meeting

The McPherson chapter of National Alliance on Mental Illness will meet Thursday, Aug. 2, at Crossroad Assembly of God Church, south of McPherson.

Beverly Martin, an advanced registered nurse practitioner, will be speak to the group and answering questions on medications and mental illness.

3 quartets to sing at museum benefit

Three quartets will be featured at a concert Saturday, Aug. 4, at Goessel High School in conjunction with Country Threshing Days. The concert will begin at 7:30 p.m.

The quartets are Detour, a women’s group singing a cappella in close harmony; Huxman Boys Quartet, from the Mound­ridge area; and Heritage Quartet, a men’s group whose members live in Newton, Goessel, Hesston and rural Canton.

The concert is a benefit event for Mennonite Heritage & Agri­cultural Museum. Admission is free, but donations will be welcomed.

Chat and Dine?Club plans Aug. 11 event

The Marion County Park and Lake Chat and Dine Club is having a potluck at 6:30 p.m. Satur­day, Aug. 11, at the North Shelter House.

Outdoor games are planned, such as horse shoes, ladder ball and washers. Participants are invited to bring other games as well. Guests are welcome.
