Daily LifeHead Start taking items for Coffeyville

Head Start of Marion-McPherson County is collecting donated items through July 12 to be transported to Coffeyville to help those displaced by the flood.

Requested items are disposable diapers, wet wipes, children’s games, toys, markers, crayons and paper.

Items may be taken to the Good News Christian Fellowship in Marion from 9 a.m. to noon Wednesday and Thursday.

The four living children of G.M. and Helena Warkentin were honored at a reunion of descendants Tuesday evening, June 26, at Parkview Church in Hillsboro. The children are (from left) Ruth Wenger, 90, Mary Thiessen, 98, Lydia McDonald, 92, and Helen, who was observing her 93rd birthday. With them are Helen’s husband Ike Thiessen, 95, and Elma Warkentin, 87, a sister-in-law. The evening included a meal as well as visiting and reminiscing. Also participating were: J.D. and Nancy Unruh, Glen and Lois Janzen, Eunice and Darrell Doerksen, Lyle and Betty Jones from Wichita; Janet Hein, Ron Warkentin, Joyce Kessler, Arlene Schale, Lyndon Thiessen and family from Hillsboro. Marion City Library will be holding a party to celebrate the end of its summer reading program at 7 p.m. July 13 at the Marion City Auditorium.

Sponsored by Central National Bank, Rob Holladay will entertain with storytelling, magic and music.

Following the program will be a walk back to the library to celebrate the five-year anniversary of the new library at the old depot.

Ice cream from Schwann’s will be served at 8 p.m.

Festivities July 3 at Schaeffler House

 

U.S. Congressman Jerry Moran will be the keynote speaker at this year’s Fourth of July festivities from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. July 3 at the Schaeffler House Museum in Hillsboro.

The evening’s entertainment will also include patriotic music on the east porch of the Schaeffler House. Kansas Rep. Don Dahl will read the Gettysburg Address as Abraham Lincoln.

The children’s “Red, White and Blue” patriotic parade will be formed at 6:15 p.m. west of the Schaeffler Carriage House. Hillsboro High School principal Dale Honeck, as Uncle Sam, will lead the parade. All children 12 and under are invited to bring their decorated wagons, tricycles, bikes, scooters and doll carriages to walk in...

David Zeiler (top photo, wearing light short-sleeved shirt) is surrounded by members of the Patriot Guard who organized a surprise sendoff for the Herington resident on Friday. Zeiler, a member of American Legion Post 366 in Hillsboro, will be leaving for his first tour of duty in Iraq. He was given a “Support Our Troops” flag, a letter of appreciation and a challenge coin for good luck. In the bottom photo, the motorcade makes its way from the staging area on Ash Street to the American Legion Hall.
