Welcome home for local Guardsmen

Dale Makovec (left) helps hold the banner presented to his son Simon as part of a “welcome home” for four local members of the Kansas National Guard Unit that recently returned from combat duty in Iraq. The presentations were made at a ceremony hosted by American Legion Post 366 in Hillsboro following the Marion County Fair parade on Wednesday. In addition to a banner, the four Guardsmen each received a lucky coin and a certificate for a year’s free membership to Post 366. Joining Makovec among the honorees were Pete Richert of Hillsboro and brothers Zachary and Jeffrey Linn.
One big melon

Donald Ewert holds a cantalope that weighed in at 14.3 pounds. Ewert harvested the large melon from his cantalope patch located northwest of Durham. He said he has been planting cantalopes for about 10 years, and this one is the biggest he’s ever grown—or seen, for that matter.

Holy Transfiguration extends invitation
Holy Transfiguration Orthodox Christian Church invites all to join in celebrating Feast Day Aug. 5-6.
The church is located at 116 N. Washington in Hillsboro.
The Transfiguration of Our Lord service begins with Great Vespers at 6:30 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 5.
On Monday, Aug. 6, the day of the Transfiguration will begin with Orthros at 9 a.m. followed by Divine Liturgy at 10 a.m.

Local theater group to meet Aug. 9The meeting of the Marion County Community Theatre Co. will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 9, in the Marion Municipal Building.

Area youth attend N.C. conference
Youth from the Hillsboro United Methodist Church were among 7,000 who attended an international youth conference in Greensboro, N.C.
The SPLAT Conference—acronym for Seek, Pray, Learn, Act, Teach—met for five days of worship, workshops and other activities.

Quilt drawing for Relay fund-raiserThe American Cancer Society Relay for Life in Marion County will be held from 6 p.m. July 20 to 6 a.m. July 21 at Tabor College’s Reimer Field in Hillsboro.The Relay Committee fund-raiser is a quilt made by Kesslers Kreations that will be on display in public places throughout the county until the relay.
Tickets will be available by donation at each site.
Father-son duo to sing at ‘Shindig’The Florence PRIDE committee is planning a “Western Shindig” for 6:30 p.m. Saturday July 28 at Veteran’s Park on Main Street in Florence.
The evening begins with a cowboy meal followed by Sons of the Konza Prairie, a father and son duo that enjoy singing songs of the Old West.
