LTCU to hold fundraiser Aug. 23The Hillsboro Long Term Care Unit will hold a fundraiser meal from 5 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 23, at the Hillsboro Farmer’s Market.
In addition to the meal, raffle tickets will be sold for a 50-year-old antique tablecloth as well as a crochet doily.
Funds raised from the event will go toward projects benefiting the LTCU residents.
Fellowship hall dedication Aug. 26
The Aulne United Methodist Church will celebrate the completion of their fellowship hall Sunday, Aug. 26.
Services will begin at 9:10 a.m. in the sanctuary, followed by a dedication service and noon meal in the new fellowship hall.
A free lunch will be served from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Blood drive scheduled for Aug. 17A Red Cross blood drive is scheduled from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Friday, Aug. 17 at United Methodist Church, 905 E. D St., Hillsboro.
Walk-in donors are welcome, but those with appointments will have first priority. To make an appointment, call 1-800-GIVE LIFE. Child development screening Aug. 21
A free screening for children birth through 5 years old will be offered from 12:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 21, in Peabody at the Peabody Methodist Church, 403 N. Sycamore.
The screening will assess development in the cognitive, social-emotional, motor and speech/language areas. Vision, hearing, and nutrition will also be checked.
The screening usually takes about one hour for a child to complete.

The Hillsboro High School Class of 1997 met July 14 at the Hillsboro Scout House for a 10-year class reunion. It was a casual event with a BBQ pork sandwich meal and time to get reacquainted. The event was organized by Jessi (Thurston) Weisbeck and Keli Chisholm.

Book group to meet Friday at libraryHillsboro Public Library’s book discussion group will meet at 9 a.m. Friday, Aug. 10 at the public library.
The discussion will cover “The Kite Runner” by Khaled Hosseini.
It is not necessary to have read the book to attend the meeting. For more information contact 947-3827.State fair to host BBQ lamb cook-off
The Kansas State Fair will add a new contest to the schedule for the 2007 fair.
The first Fresh American Lamb Sanctioned BBQ Cook-Off Contest, organized by the Kansas Sheep Council, along with the American Lamb Board and the Kansas City Barbeque, will allow contestants an opportunity to win cash prizes and trophies for their BBQ skills.

Dale Makovec (left) helps hold the banner presented to his son Simon as part of a “welcome home” for four local members of the Kansas National Guard Unit that recently returned from combat duty in Iraq. The presentations were made at a ceremony hosted by American Legion Post 366 in Hillsboro following the Marion County Fair parade on Wednesday. In addition to a banner, the four Guardsmen each received a lucky coin and a certificate for a year’s free membership to Post 366. Joining Makovec among the honorees were Pete Richert of Hillsboro and brothers Zachary and Jeffrey Linn.
