Senior Scribbles (Week of September 9, 2015)

Hillsboro senior center

The center is having bingo Sept. 9, and our jam session is Sept. 10.

We hope everyone can join us for one or both of those events.

During the Arts & Crafts Fair on Sept. 19, the center starting at 11 a.m. plans to serve Hillsboro sausage, verenika, cherry moos and pie for $9.

The event is a fundraiser for the senior center with all proceeds going toward needed improvements and for operating the facility.

The north side of the parking lot will be blocked off for parking.

Those planning to attend are asked to come in through the alley to park.

The center is also in need of volunteers, and Meals on Wheels drivers.

For those who can help, call the center.

As an added bonus for volunteering, a free meal is available the day someone works.

We also provide meals for people who would like to share a program with us.

Thank you to everyone for supporting the senior center.

We can always use donations to help keep our center going. It takes a lot to run the center on a day-to-day basis.

Money for meals goes to the North?Central Area Agency on Aging to help pay for the food, site manager and cooks, which doesn?t leave us funds for the center.

A big thank you to our volunteers and board members.

For more information on these things, call 620-947-2304 or stop by 212 N. Main St. between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m.

?Brenda Moss, director

Marion senior center

We helped Ron Wright celebrate his 70th birthday Aug. 28 at the center. He is a kitchen volunteer five days a week, helping his sister, Barb Bitner, who is our head cook.

Thanks to Harlow Warneke for grilling hamburgers for us that day.

Watch the menu for this meal and come join us.

I was invited to speak at the Kiwanis Club meeting Sept. 1 and enjoyed telling about the senior center and our meals.

Lanell Hett gave the program on Sept. 2. She is the transportation secretary for the Marion County Department on Aging. She?s worked at the center for 33 years, always caring for older citizens.

Come join us for Senior Center Day Sept. 16 and hear about Gayla Ratzlaff?s trip to the Grand Canyon.

We have volunteer opportunities. We need drivers to deliver Meals on Wheels and to provide transportation for doctor appointments and other services. If interested, come in and talk with me or Lanell Hett.

For more information or to make a reservation, call 620-382-2942, or stop by 309 S. Third St., Marion.

Peabody Senior Center

We were closed for Labor Day. Hope everyone had a wonderful long weekend.

We, too, at the senior center enjoyed our time and have come back refreshed and ready to continue serving you into the fall season.

The birthday dinner is Wednesday, Sept. 9, to celebrate September birthdays.

Marion County Sheriff Rob Craft is providing the program Sept. 9 and will answer questions regarding Marion County.

Our local board meeting is Monday, Sept. 14. We are also hosting the Senior Citizens of Marion County board meeting Friday, Sept. 18.

This is an informative meeting, and if possible, make a reservation and attend.

On Sept. 22 we will have the business meeting after the midday lunch.

Brunch, which is a big attraction, is at 9:30 a.m. Sept. 25. We will again feature biscuits with sausage gravy, coffee cake or cinnamon roll, and fruit. Reservations are needed.

The SCMC annual meeting is at the Marion Senior Center Oct. 15. We hope everyone will make plans to attend.

Peppernut season is right around the corner. We begin baking Oct. 8 after the kitchen is cleared from lunch. We will bake each Monday and Thursday until Thanksgiving.

We need a lot of volunteers and, for those available, please join us as often as possible.

We appreciate all our volunteers and encourage more people to volunteer.

It is good for the volunteer and the organization being helped.

For more information, or to make reservations, call 620-983-2226.
