Senior Scribbles (July 4, 2012)

hillsboro senior center

With the end of June, we start a new month with a bang.

Everyone is encouraged to wear their red white and blue July 4 and on July 6 wear your summer hats to the center.

Someone might even get a prize for wearing their hat.

The center’s board meeting is July 9.

Come join us July 10 when Marion County Sheriff Rob Craft will be here. We hope to have a nice crowd join us that day for a meal and the program.

We still need volunteers for July and if someone can help, we urge them to give us a call. Remember, anyone who volunteers to help will get their meal free on that day.

Mary McFadden will be here July 17 to do footcare. For those who would like this service, call for an appointment.

Anyone new to the area is invited to stop by and pick up a July menu or come and have a meal with us.

We like meeting new people in our community.

I want to thank everyone for their prayers last week when I underwent surgery. I feel truly blessed for all the kindness and it was appreciated.

For more information on volunteering, programs, appointments or other center activities, call 620-947-2304. To make meal reservations, please call no later than 9 a.m. the day of the meal. We are located at 212 N. Main St.

Hope to see you at the center soon.

We took the big van to the Crown Uptown Dinner Theatre in Wichita June 21 to see “A Chorus Line.”

We discovered some changes including there is no longer a buffet. There is a menu for the meal now.

Those going were Flo Rahn and Irene Bezdek of Hillsboro; Maxine Barton of Lincolnville; Mary Costello, Bettie Batt, Carolyn Woerz, Betty Crumrine, Dorothy Youk, Joyce Smith, Wilma Nice and Janet Bryant, all of Marion.

Our driver was Shirley Moore. We stopped at Braum’s in Newton on the way home.

We plan to go to “Sweeney Todd” in September and “White Christmas” later.

Watch this column for exact dates.

Thanks to Shirley Bowers for filling in for me at noon so I could go on this trip.

The senior center will be a drop off site for the Purple Caps Project (knitted or crocheted).

The newsletter crew met and quickly assembled the newsletter for mailing. Helpers were Wanda Hamm, Nora Richter, Jane Makovec, Elsie Reiswig, Norma Woerz, Fred Puttroff, Evelyn Jewett, Al and Gloria Ash and Shirley Moore.

Vivian Conyers celebrated her birthday June 26 with us.

We welcomed residents of Hilltop Manor eating with us June 27.

We have artwork on display by Tillie Schafers and Madonna Schafers. There are five paintings, each of flowers.

Our program that day was given by Ginny Lind, playing well-known songs on her flute, accompanied by Shirley Bowers. The program was a big hit.

Come join us July 11. The musical program will be given by Lenore Dieter.

For more information on programs or to make a lunch reservation, call 620-382-2942 by 9 a.m. the day of the meal or stop by the center, 309 S. Third St.
