hillsboro senior center

The center is planning several events in the coming weeks with Bingo kicking off activities Wednesday, May 23.

We would also like to encourage everyone to wear their summer hats May 25.

This month’s birthday dinner was scheduled May 21 because the center is closed for the Memorial Day weekend May 28.

Come join us after lunch May 30 when Mary Lake of El Dorado will talk about her first novel, “Departings.”

Born in El Dorado, she will chronicle life in her hometown and in Eureka, where she grew up. The book, according to information about it and the author, deals with the impact of El Dorado’s oil boom and ups and downs of those living there in the 1920s, who started out with so much.

Remember everyone is welcome, no matter what their age, to have lunch with us. Meals are $2.75 for 60 and older and $4.50 for people 59 and younger.

For those who would like to volunteer, they can get a free meal the day they work.

June menus are now available.

For more information on volunteering, programs, appointments or other center activities, call 620-947-2304. We are located at 212 N. Main St.

We hope everyone has a safe and happy Memorial Day weekend.

The front of our building is in the process of being landscaped by Rhonda Brenzikofer.

This is a memorial for her late husband, Richard. It will add significantly to our appearance.

It was noted that the recent “Kansas!” magazine lists Marion’s Big Scoop in an article about ice cream shops. There is also information about Emma Chase Cafe in Cottonwood Falls and the Friday night live jam sessions.

Shirley Bowers played a song, “My Sweetheart’s the Man in the Moon” in honor of the super moon seen in the sky. She also played, “M is for the Million Things She Gave Me on May 11.”

Senior Center Day was May 16. The program after lunch was given by Gayla Ratzlaff, coordinator, Marion County Department of Aging. She talked about the Affordable Care Act and other issues.

We will be closed Memorial Day, May 28.

Come join us May 30 for a musical program by Steve Vincent of Hillsboro.

For more information on programs or to make a lunch reservation at the center, call 620-382-2942 by 9 a.m. the day of the meal or stop by the center, 309 S. Third St.

Peabody senior center

Another month is rapidly drawing to completion. It’s hard to believe that on Friday, May 25, we will be having our brunch at 9:30 a.m., just before the long Memorial Day weekend.

The meal will be a ham, egg and potato casserole, blueberry cobbler or cinnamon roll.

Kim Nellans, our cook, prepares wonderful meals at noon, but she really puts on a tasty spread for brunch, too.

Everyone always seems to enjoy having our holiday brunches so they can get on with their weekend plans, but please remember to call in to reserve your meal by Wednesday if at all possible.

There is a lot of work involved in preparing this meal, and it helps Kim to know the numbers she will be working with to prepare enough food.

Delivered meals will go out after the brunch.

This weekend celebrates the lives of those in the military who sacrificed their lis so that we might enjoy our freedom. We also include family members who have gone before us as we decorate graves.

I always marvel at how beautiful the cemeteries are as I travel on this weekend—it is something to behold.

Take time to remember our freedom as we go through the many celebrations of this weekend.

I know Peabody has many festivities going on, as well as many people going out to the area lakes for the first outing of the season.

Have a fun and safe weekend and be back for lunch at 11:45 a.m. Tuesday as we will be closed Monday, May 28.

We are always looking for additional volunteers, so if you would like to volunteer, give us a call. We will surely appreciate you.

For those planning to eat lunch with us, remember we need 24-hour advance reservations and cancelations are required and appreciated.

For more information about volunteering or to make reservations the day before, call 620-983-2226.
