Hillsboro Senior Center

Welcome to March and hope everyone can come join us for a meal at the center.

Activities this week and next include Bingo Wednesday after lunch and the breakfast fundraiser March 17. We hope everyone can come and support the center. More information about the fundraiser is forthcoming.

We are still needing volunteers from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., and also a head cook, so if you would like to help or apply for the position, please stop by.

The March menus are available, but for those who would like it mailed, please let us know.

Welcome to March—coming in like a lamb. Start looking for signs of spring.

This past week we’ve had birthday treats galore, beginning with Dorothy Conyers on Feb. 23. Bob Peterson provided cake on that day since he brought in five guests. Mary Hett baked for him.

Sue Clough celebrated her birthday Feb. 24 and Barbara Bitner, our assistant cook’s, birthday was Feb. 27.

We welcomed residents of Hilltop Manor Feb. 29. We had 60 people that day, possibly for the chocolate fountain brought by our speaker.

Donna Becker of Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice spoke on “Life is Like a Box of Chocolates.” The rules of chocolate were read before lunch.

Join us March 14 for an Americanism class provided by American Legion representatives from another county.

For more information on programs or to make a lunch reservation at the center, call 620-382-2942 by 9 a.m. the day of the meal or stop by the center, 309 S. Third St.

March is already marching on as we are in the second week.

On each Wednesday from now until Easter we are having a short Lenten Service right after lunch. The local pastors are each participating and we invite you to join us. We would love for you to join us for lunch. However, if you are unable to eat a meal with us, you are still welcome to come for the devotional. The suggested time would be noon.

Pastor Rodger Charles from the Baptist Church will be here Wednesday, and pastor David Ragland will have the service March 14.

Last month we elected rather than to bring candy bars to Bingo we would bring cans of food for the local food pantry. It was a tremendous success, so we decided to repeat it this month. Bingo is March 15 and admission will be a couple cans of food for the food pantry. Of course we don’t really have “admission” and, if anyone would like to play and doesn’t have canned foods or nonperishables, they are still welcome to come.

The center will host the monthly Marion County Department on Aging board meeting March 16. Anyone who would like to attend and get valuable information for seniors, please call and reserve a meal.

People who failed to pick up commodities in February, or need more, call Pat Henderson or the center. We do have some available that will be distributed on a first-come basis.

Please remember to reserve your meals the day before you plan to eat. Meals are served each week day at 11:45 a.m. at a suggested donation of $2.75 for those 60 and above and $4.50 for those 59 and under.
