Francis Cook, 92

Francis Lemmer Cook, 92, retired teacher and Marine Corps veteran, died Dec. 18 at the Kansas Veterans Home in Winf­ield.

The funeral was Dec. 20 at Florence United Methodist Church. He was buried at Hillcrest Cemetery in Florence.

He was born March 27, 1915, to George Andrew and Lillie Ann Cook in Deaf Smith County near Hereford, Texas. On Jan. 3, 1946, he was married to Otillia (Tillie) Sevcik.

He is survived by a son, Robert Allan Cook of Hutchin­son; and two granddaughters.

Gene Costello, 87

Gene Costello, 87, retired farmer, died Dec. 13 at the Golden Living Center in Marion.

A Rosary was held Dec. 16 at St. Mark’s Catholic Church in Marion.

The funeral was held Dec. 17 at St. Mark’s Catholic Church. He was buried at the Tampa Catholic Cemetery.

He was born Sept. 19, 1920, in Tampa. In 1957, he was married to Betty Buser, who predeceased him.

He is survived by his sons, Jim Costello of Colwich, Tom Costello of Garden Plain, and Dan Costello of Washington D.C.; his daughters, Sharon Gutsch of Lincolnville, and Jane Dodds of Lenexa; a brother, Ed Costello of Marion; sisters, Anna Marie Bergkamp of Pretty Prairie, Catherine Hajek of Tampa, Rosemary Lewis of Wichita, and Florence Scanlan of Laguna...

Esther Carlson, 87

Esther Pearl Carlson, 87, of Carlton, homemaker, died Dec. 5 at Enterprise (Kan.) Estates Nursing Center.

The funeral was held Dec. 8 at Mt. Pleasant Presbyterian Church, rural Abilene. She was buried in the Woodlawn Cemetery in Carlton.

She was born July 23, 1920, to Pearl Allen and Helen Pearl (Anderson) Snook in Roxbury. On Feb. 19, 1941, she was married to Emil Emmanuel Carlson, who survives.

She is also survived by a son, Fred Carlson of Hillsboro; three daughters, Sharon Flaherty of Salina, Mary Rohrer of Hope, and Anna Bock of Hutchinson; 11 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

Marvin Groening, 82

Marvin Groening, 82, printer and production manager at Hillsboro M.B. Publishing House, died Dec. 1 at Parkside Homes in Hillsboro.

The funeral has been rescheduled from Dec. 7 to 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 6 at Hillsboro Mennonite Brethren Church. The burial will be held at 9:30 a.m. at Hillsboro Mennonite Cemetery.

He was born Jan. 24, 1925, to Frank and Agnes Cornelson Groening in Herbert, Saskatchewan, Canada. On Aug. 8, 1946, he was married to Elsie Ewert, who survives in Hillsboro.

He is also survived by two sons, Loren Groening of Hays, and Joel and Cindy Groening of Nasuli, Philippines; two daughters, Marilyn and Ron Hiebert of Hillsboro, and Karleen and Jerry Warkentin of McAllen, Texas; 13 grandchildren and...

Charles Kjellin, 86

 

Charles Willard Kjellin, 86, farmer, died Nov. 21 at the Golden Living Center in Marion.

The funeral was Nov. 24 at Eastmoor United Methodist Church in Marion.

He was born Aug. 28, 1921, to Willard and Edna (Mitchell) Kjellin near Garrison. On April 9, 1950, he was married to JoAnn Peterson, who predeceased him in 2002.

He is survived by his children, Mary Beth Bowers, Karen Kelly, Pat Enos and Doug Kjellin; 11 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
