Levern worked 37 years as an electrician and also farmed. The couple raised five children, have 10 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

For most of their adult lives, the couple lived in the Lebo and Neosho Rapids area. They moved to Hillsboro five years ago to be near their daughter, Jane King of Marion, and niece Lindy Wiens of Hillsboro.
