Mother’s Day can be a hard holiday
Tuesday, 14 May 2013 13:33
In our house, my husband and I really don’t get into celebrating the so-called “Hallmark” holidays. Mother’s Day is generally included in that list, along with Father’s Day and Valentine’s Day.It’s not like we don’t value each other, or our parents, but we just don’t spend much energy (or money) to mark those set-aside dates.
So when I found a little white box with a navy ribbon at my place at the breakfast table, I was surprised. I knew I’d receive some token of...

Itching, like beauty, is skin deep
Tuesday, 16 April 2013 12:50
After staring at a blinking cursor for over an hour last night, writing occasionally, deleting frequently, I did the only thing I could. I turned off the computer and turned on the TV.Maybe it’s the way I’ve been trained. Since as long as I can remember, my teachers have stressed the importance of the opening paragraph. The hook. Readers are supposed to be drawn in, not able to resist reading the remainder of the essay.
So when I can’t come up with a great lead-in to a thought, I have to let my work sit. While I have known some people who like to start with the main idea and work back to the introduction, that’s just not for me. I like to start at the very beginning because, well, it really is a very good place to start.

Turning 30 a ‘surprise’ transition
Tuesday, 19 March 2013 13:36
It’s the start of a new decade this week. I turn 30. Over the past days, a few friends asked if I was doing anything special to celebrate. The answer: not really. At least nothing big.My mom and I are going shopping without kids. (So I guess that’s pretty big in and of itself. I won’t have to chase kids out of the clothes racks. Or continually repeat the phrase “stay with me.” My mom won’t try to run away from me.... At least I don’t think she will.)
Anyway, I figured the big day would arrive. I would pour myself a big cup of coffee, sit down at the computer and receive my Facebook well-wishes with a gratified status update. I would fill both daughters’ cereal bowls at least three times each. And maybe I would also...
Coffee is my connection to normal
Tuesday, 19 February 2013 13:39
Maybe it’s because it’s a Monday morning. Or maybe it’s not getting enough rest for the last six to eight months. Maybe it’s giving up my snooze button for Lent. Or maybe it’s because there’s a new bottle of white chocolate caramel creamer in my fridge.Or it could just be the perfect storm of maybes. But I can’t seem to get coffee off my mind.
Growing up, I always wondered how my dad could stand to drink cup after cup...black, no less. But at my current state of fuzziness, I now understand.
Coffee is my connection to normal.
I guess that’s probably how an addiction starts. But it’s much easier to be outnumbered three to one all day if I have a little caffeine in my veins.
I haven’t always been this way. I used...
If you give mom a drink mix...
Tuesday, 15 January 2013 14:19
If you give a mom drink mix, she’ll want some hot water to go with it.She’ll run some water in a Pyrex container and put it in the microwave.
She’ll probably be on her way out the door, so she’ll pull a travel mug from the cabinet.
When the microwave dings, she’ll retrieve her water and set it on the counter near the mug.
She’ll measure out her cappuccino and spoon it into her mug. Then she’ll stir. And stir. And stir.
She’ll get a dusty puff of mix in her face and think there is something wrong with the mix. She’ll probably stir some more.
And then she’ll realize her cup of hot water is still on the counter.
She’ll pour the water into the travel mug and probably think she lost her mind.
Losing her mind...
