Hillsboro High School’s only state qualifier from a year ago returns this spring to lead the Trojan tennis team in 2008.
Clay Shewey, who finished eighth in singles at the Class 3-2-1A tournament as a sophomore in 2007, returns taller and more experienced this spring.
He’ll be joined by four other returning letter-winners: Mathew Brown, Ben Heyen, Mark Prieb, all seniors, and sophomore Taylor Hagen.

The Hillsboro golf team returns two-thirds of a triple threat that carried the Trojans to a regional championship and a fifth-place finish at the Class 3A golf tournament a year ago.
Whether the return of Daniel Kunantaev, who finished fourth at state as a freshman, and Justin Kent, who placed 12th as a sophomore, will be enough to leverage the Trojan team back into a state berth may be the biggest unknown facing coach Scott O’Hare this spring.

The sun may have set on one of the brightest eras in track and field at Hillsboro High School, but head coach Dennis Boldt does not see dark days ahead in 2008.
Particularly on the girls’ side, the graduation of JuliAnne Chisholm, Hannah Marsh and Tina Frick marked the end of a four-year run that produced two state championships and two runner-up trophies.
“Of all the sports these past few years, the most success has come from these girls, and it’s a credit to their athletic ability and their interest in the sport,” Boldt said. “We lose two thirds of our points from last year.

Gaining experience main goal for HHS baseball squad

Having graduated a core of six seniors that accounted for nearly two-thirds of the offense from last season’s 8-9 squad, and with a current roster of 14 players with 12 underclassmen, Hillsboro baseball coach Phil Oelke knows his Trojans are in a rebuilding mode this spring.
