One thing Facebook does well

There is one big thing that Facebook is good for, and has changed the world for the better. That would be for sharing photos with friends and family.The rest of it, not so much. For me, it will never be about buying or selling anything, at least that is how I think at the moment.

Recital showcased kids’ talent

We were invited to attend last week’s piano recital put on by the Tabor College preparatory school at the Wohlgemuth Center. I was very impressed with the talent on display.What was amazing to me was that none of the students appeared to be nervous. If they were, it sure didn’t show.
The youngest players performed first and on up the line to the oldest. The talent escalated as they went.
I wish now I had stayed with the piano when I was a kid. My brother Mark, who plays in two bands in Tulsa, says the same thing. My sister, Elaine, did stick with it and is an accomplished pianist and organist today. She has given lessons in the Minneapolis, Minn., area for about 20 years.

It’s hard to be bored these days

Were you ever bored as a kid? I know I was and I know my kids and grandkids were, too. However, as an adult there are a thousand ways not be bored these days. It’s easy not to be that way if you own a business, serve on a civic or chuch committee, own a house or are in charge of the household, follow sports teams, watch favorite TV shows, have a smart phone, a computer, travel for pleasure and for business, file income taxes and other taxes, fix things, remodel a house or business, and on and on—you get the idea. I haven’t been bored in years.•

Train is an option for traveling

After writing about my travel misadventures last week, I received an e-mail from an Amtrak person suggesting I should take the train to Chicago next time. The note stated the train has never been canceled in more than a dozen years and probably a lot longer than that.So I checked online for the departure and arrival times and the rate. Based on what I saw, I wouldn’t have been able to make my connection for the trip to Dubuque to catch a ride to Moline. Total travel time is about 12 hours if you don’t mind leaving in the middle of the night. Time is always of the essence.

Tale of a bad trip to Illinois

I thought we should have chicken for Sunday dinner, so we went to the deli at Vogt’s. The chicken looked and tasted great, but the front of Vogt’s store looked equally good.The new look is great and the red tile roofing mimics the red tile their store downtown had for many years.

One of our part-timers walked in the other day and said the new awning on the Free Press building looked nice. I hated to say that we finished that project that last May.

I don’t know how much room it will take in this column to describe the travel nightmares I experienced last week on the trip to Moline, Ill., for the spring Midwest Free Community Papers conference.
