Albert and Martha Loewen of North Newton will celebrate their 50thanniversary with a program at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, July 1, at KoernerHeights Church of the Mennonite Brethren in Newton, followed by areception from 3:15 p.m. to 5 p.m. Albert Loewen and Martha JaneThiessen were married June 28, 1957, at Zoar Mennonite Brethren Churchin Inman. Albert was employed by the former Crossroads Coop in Goesseland North Newton, and Martha taught school in Cimarron, Hillsboro andGoessel. Both are retired. The event is hosted by their three children,Lois and Siegfried Snyder of Wichita, James and Naomi Loewen of Wichitaand Duane and Kathy Loewen of Newton; and 13 grandchildren.

David Zeiler (top photo, wearing light short-sleeved shirt) is surrounded by members of the Patriot Guard who organized a surprise sendoff for the Herington resident on Friday. Zeiler, a member of American Legion Post 366 in Hillsboro, will be leaving for his first tour of duty in Iraq. He was given a “Support Our Troops” flag, a letter of appreciation and a challenge coin for good luck. In the bottom photo, the motorcade makes its way from the staging area on Ash Street to the American Legion Hall.

An American Red Cross blood drive will be held from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Friday, June 22, at the American Legion at 405 S. Floral in Hillsboro.

Walk-ins are welcome, or make an appointment by calling 1-800-GIVELIFE.

Each person who comes to donate will receive a free Red Cross T-shirt.Afternoon movie at Marion library

A movie will be shown at 2 p.m. Friday, June 22, at the Marion City Library.

The bride is the daughter of Mark and Ginger Whitney of Peabody and the granddaughter of Dennis Dillon of Harper, Beverly Dillon-Craig of Wichita, Janetta Whitney of Wichita and the late Wendell Whitney.

The groom is the son of Robert and Sandra McVey of Peabody and the grandson of Donald and Gloria Webber of Newton, Jodie McVey of Danville, Calif., and the late Bruce McVey.

Both graduated in May from Fort Hay State University, the bride with a bachelor of arts and the groom with two bachelor’s degrees in business administration.
