DEATH Brandt • michael a. baker, 55,

of Overland Park, died Oct. 31.

He was born Aug. 2, 1957, to Arnold and Rita Baker in Dubuque, Iowa. He was married to Kathryn Bowring.

Survivors include son Kristoffer and Stacy Baker; step- daughters Whitney Washmon Darcy and Debra Flores and William McCauley; seven grandchildren; sister Andrea and Steve Bucini; two nieces and three grandnephews.

Wiens to celebrate 80th birthday

LaVonne Wiens will be celebrating her 80th birthday Nov. 10. She is married to Eldon Wiens.

The couple have four children to include Brad and Jane Wiens of rural Hillsboro, Diane and Garvie Schmidt of Hillsboro, Kim and Amy Wiens of Midlothian, Texas, and Cheryl and D.J. Kauffman of Hutchinson and 12 grandchildren.

Tabor Church plans chicken dinner

The annual Tabor Church Mennonite Men’s chicken barbecue will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 8.

Donations will go toward Wednesday children’s programs and church facilities’ projects.

 

Free child screening coming to Goessel

Marion County Early Inter­vention will offer a screening for children birth through age 5 Tuesday, Nov. 13, at the Goessel Mennonite Church, 109 S. Church St.

Appointments will be available from 12:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. At the screening, children will be checked for development in the learning, motor, language and social areas. Vision and hearing also will be screened.

RSVP deadline for HCF event is Nov. 1

The public is invited to attend a celebration banquet next month highlighting the achievements of the Hillsboro Com­munity Foundation and arts over the past year.

The event is scheduled for 6 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 13, at the Hillsboro Mennonite Brethren Church, 300 Prairie Pointe. An RSVP is required by Nov. 1.

The program will include recognition of past board members, news about HCF, music by Spirit & Celebration from Hillsboro High School, and a reader’s theater presented by Tabor College.

HCF seeking 2013 grant applications

The Hillsboro Community Foundation is accepting applications for grant funds to be distributed in 2013 from the Hillsboro Area Impact Fund.

Organizations may apply that are exempt from federal income tax under Section 501(c)(3) and serve Hillsboro and surrounding communities.

Application forms can be downloaded from hillsborofree­press.com or cityofhillsboro.net, or picked up from Eileen Unruh at The Insurance Center at 105 S. Main, Hillsboro. The deadline for submission is Nov. 16.

The Impact Fund is an unrestricted grant fund created by the generosity of individuals who have contributed to this endowment. Grants will not be limited to a particular issue or target population.
