• michael j. childs Jr., 37,a design engineer at AGCO Corp., died Jan. 2 at his home in North Newton.
A memorial service will be announced at a later time.
He was born April 4, 1975, to Michael Jay and Loretta Dee Smith Childs Sr. in Hillsboro. He was married to Amber (Sadowsky) Childs of Newton, who survives.

Phelps, Goering to exchange vows
Larry and Connie Phelps of Abilene and Charles and Annora Goering of Marion announce the engagement and approaching marriage of their children, Hannah Phelps to David Goering of Hillsboro.
The bride-to-be is a 2002 graduate of Bethel Christian School in Abilene. She is self-employed designing and selling jewelry.
The groom-elect is a high school graduate of Berean Academy in Elbing, attended Grace College of the Bible in Omaha, Neb., and took a two-year course through Liberty Home Bible Institute. He is owner and operator of Goering Trucking and chaplain at Truckers Christian Chapel, Newell’s Truck Stop in Newton.
The couple plan a March 9 wedding.

Swans to celebrate 40th anniversaryThe family of Paul and Kathy Swan is hosting a 40th wedding anniversary for the couple from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 20.
The “come and go” reception will be at the Marion City Building, 208 E. Santa Fe St., Marion.
They were married Jan. 20, 1973, at St. Mark Catholic Church in Marion.
The two were both employed at Quality Food Market in downtown Marion until the closing of the local grocery store in 1993.
Paul then went to work full-time with his business, Swan’s Refrigeration & Air Conditioning. Kathy is employed as the deputy treasurer at the Marion County Courthouse.
They have resided in Marion since their marriage.

VanBuren grew up in the Florence/Wonsevu area and retired from the El Dorado Texaco Refinery after 37 years.

James Olberding of Burns, a farmer and rancher, is celebrating his 85th birthday Jan. 12.
He has lived his entire life in Burns on his farm.
