Memorial Day at Memorial Park

 

Memorial Day services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, May 28, at Memorial Park in Hillsboro, hosted by the American Legion Hillsboro Post No. 366.

Speaker will be Kansas Sen. Vicki Schmidt of the 20th District.

A $10 steak dinner will follow at noon in the Legion ballroom.

Kelly and Brenda Bernhardt of Marion announce the birth of a daughter, Cassidy Michelle, born May 1 at Newton Medical Center.

She weighed 8 pounds, 4 ounces and was 20 inches long.

She joins sisters Cheyenne, 5, and Callie, 3.

Grandparents are LaVerne and Janice Stika of Herington and Jim and Teresa Bernhardt of Marion. Great-grandparents are Agnes Bernhardt and Lauren and Luetta Enns, all of Hillsboro.

Ella Becker

 

Ella Becker, 93, former owner of Lighthouse Christian Book and Gift Store, died May 13 in Hillsboro.

The service was held May 17 at First Mennonite Church in Hillsboro with pastor Dave Plett officiating. Burial was at Schartner Cemetery in Marion, S.D.

She was born May 14, 1913, to Abraham and Helena (Unruh) Unruh in Dolton, S.D. On April 2, 1934, she was married to Sam Becker, who died in 1989.

She is survived by three daughters, Darlene and Robert Franz of Hillsboro, Elvira and Richard Nickel of Rapid City, S.D., and Colleen and Wayne Regehr of Granby, Colo.; seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Parents of the couple are Frank and Jan Moffitt of Hillsboro and Robert and Janet Craft of Marion. Grandparents of the couple are Glen and Olive Atkinson of Salinas, Calif., Norman Craft of Marion, Leeland Crawford and Darlene Crawford of Clay Center and the late James and Ellen “Nellie” Moffitt of Tampa and the late Joyce Craft of Marion.

The bride wore an ivory and champagne strapless gown with an intricate and heavily beaded overlay. The gown was fitted through the bodice and below the hip fell into a full, chapel-length train. She wore pearl hair pins...

Donald E. and Jane Hiebert of rural Newton will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary with an open house from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Sunday, May 27, at the 1904 Preparatory School in Goessel.

Donald E. Hiebert and Jane Klassen were married May 25, 1957, at the First Presbyterian Church in Halstead. He is a lifelong farmer and she is a homemaker and retired teacher.

The open house is hosted by their children and grandchild: Keven, Debra, and Lauren Hiebert of rural Newton; Natalie Hiebert of Tribune; and Chad and Marjean Deines of Goodland.
