Melanie Hagen and Phillip Thiessen, both of Hillsboro, were married at a 5 p.m. ceremony Sept. 8 at Hillsboro Mennonite Brethren Church with pastor Bill Damberg officiating.

The bride is the daughter of Roger and Helen Hagen of Hillsboro. The groom is the son of Pam Ratzlaff of Hillsboro and Walt Thiessen of Wichita.

HCF now collecting grant applications

The Hillsboro Area Impact Fund, the unrestricted endowment fund of Hillsboro Community Foundation, has now begun its inaugural year granting process.

Grant applications can be picked up from Brad Bartel, HCF secretary-treasurer, at Emprise Bank, 104 E. Grand, Hillsboro. Applicants can also call Bartel at 620-947-3464 (ext. 104) to request an application.

The quickest way for applicants to get an Impact Fund grant application is to download it from the Free Press Web site: www.hillsborofreepress.com.

Grant applications will be accepted from now until Dec. 31. Details as to the process, criteria and where to direct questions are included on the application form.

Esther Carlson, 87

Esther Pearl Carlson, 87, of Carlton, homemaker, died Dec. 5 at Enterprise (Kan.) Estates Nursing Center.

The funeral was held Dec. 8 at Mt. Pleasant Presbyterian Church, rural Abilene. She was buried in the Woodlawn Cemetery in Carlton.

She was born July 23, 1920, to Pearl Allen and Helen Pearl (Anderson) Snook in Roxbury. On Feb. 19, 1941, she was married to Emil Emmanuel Carlson, who survives.

She is also survived by a son, Fred Carlson of Hillsboro; three daughters, Sharon Flaherty of Salina, Mary Rohrer of Hope, and Anna Bock of Hutchinson; 11 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

Greetings from the Hillsboro Senior Center! We are down to just 13 days until Christmas. Let us do some of your holiday cooking by joining us for a meal and an activity or two.

For Thursday Theatre on Dec. 13, we will show the two-hour movie “White Christmas,” after lunch.

Beginning Monday, Dec. 17, we will have Red and Green week. Please wear Christmas clothing or red and green to the center during the week.

We will have our Carry-in Meal Wednesday, Dec. 19. Please bring a dish or dessert to share as well as your own table settings.

Also on Dec. 19, Dr. Zafar will begin hearing checks at 11:15 a.m. followed by a performance by Spirit & Celebration at 11:30 a.m. Lunch will immediately follow the performance. We hope you will...

The bride is the daughter of Doug and Lisa Duerksen of Goessel. The groom is the son of Ron and Roberta McGlachlin of Newton.

Maid of honor was Rinda Duerksen. Bridesmaids were Heather Blandin and Raeanne Casey. The flower girl was Allison Blandin.

Best man was Brandon McGlachlin. Groomsmen were Lee Curle, Derrek Duerksen and Tristan Schmitz. The ring bearer was Matthew Eldridge.

Following the ceremony, a reception was held at the Pilsen Community Center.

The bride is employed at Bethesda Home in Goessel. The groom is employed with R Messner Construction in Wichita.
