Magdalene Diener, 94, homemaker, died Feb. 17 at Bethesda Home in Goessel.

The funeral will be at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 19 at Spring Valley Mennonite Church, rural Canton. A private family burial will be held.

She was born Oct. 11, 1913, to Gerhard and Marie Wiebe in Whitewater. On March 28, 1945, she was married to Charles L. Diener, who predeceased her.

She is survived by a son, Daniel and Christine Diener of Goshen, Ind.; three daughters, Ida and Rod Huebert of Moundridge, Ruby and Gary...

Vernon Goentzel, 87

Vernon Goentzel, 87, former International Harvester store employee in Marion, died Feb. 5 at the Hillsboro Community Medical Center Long Term Care Unit.

The funeral was Feb. 9 at Eastmoor United Methodist Church in Marion. He was buried with military rites at Hillsboro Mennonite Brethren Cemetery.

He was born March 17, 1920, to Peter and Mary Goertz on the family farm near Marion. On Sept. 16, 1949, he was married to Wanita Ewert, who survives in Hillsboro.

He is also survived by a son, John and Marlene of Marion; two daughters, Jocelyn Classen of Marion and Rose Mary and Craig Loewe of Colorado Springs; a brother, Ben of Durham; a sister, Ruth Goentzel of Hillsboro; and seven grandchildren.

Marion Co. Spelling Bee rescheduled

 

The Marion County Spelling Bee has been rescheduled to 10 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 14, at the Hillsboro High School auditorium. The Spelling Bee was postponed Feb. 6 due to inclement weather.

The public is invited to attend.

 Kiwanis Club to meet Feb. 19

 

The Hillsboro Kiwanis Club will meet at noon Tuesday, Feb. 19 at the city building.

Lunch will be provided by Fat N Sassy BBQ for $7.

Following the normal business meeting, a representative from Main Street Ministries will discuss the operations and mission of the organization. There will also be discussion about the various programs the organization has planned and any needed support to put those plans to action...

Greetings from the Hillsboro Senior Center. February is a great time to come in for lunch or an activity. Come and make us a part of your week.

For Valentines day please wear hearts, red or pink to the Senior Center. Commodities will be distributed at 9:30 a.m. On Friday, Feb. 15, men’s coffee will begin at 3 p.m. A carry-in meal will be held Wednesday, Feb. 20. Please bring table settings and a dish or dessert to share. Hearing checks will begin at 11:15 a.m. on a first come, first serve basis. Our guest speaker, Dennis Scharenberg, will speak on wellness and prevention after lunch.

Kevin and Paula Herbel of Durham announce the birth of a daughter, Calabria Grace, born Jan. 24 at Mercy Hospital in Moundridge.

She weighed 7 pounds 15 ounces and was 21 inches long.

Her siblings are Aaron, 17, Danea, 16, Joshua, 15, Caleb, 12, Jacob, 9, Karina, 7, and Jeremiah, 4.

Maternal grandparents are the late Melvin and Neva Lolling.

Paternal grandparents are Willis and Eleanor Herbel of Tampa.
