A 20-year-old Junction City mother and a 2-year-old child were fatally injured Friday in a two-vehicle crash four miles south of Herington on U.S. Highway 56 in Marion County.
The drivers in both vehicles and four passengers were also injured; two remain in serious condition.
The accident, according to a Kansas Highway Patrol official, happened at about noon when Byran K. Alfred, 21, driving a 2010 Nissan went left of center from the southbound lane of U.S. Highway 56 and struck a pickup truck.
After hitting the pickup, Alfred’s Nissan then entered the east ditch and overturned.
Passengers Amber L. Alfred, and Josiah Alfred died. Amber was taken to Zeiner Funeral Home in Marion and Josiah was taken to Herington Municipal Hospital.
Keith Johnson, 6, also of Junction City, and the driver were both taken by LifeTeam to Via Christi Health-St. Francis. They are both in serious condition, a hospital official said Monday.
The driver and three passengers in the 2008 Chevrolet Silverado also were injured.
The driver, Toby L. Biehler, 41, of Herington; Austin Roberts, 23, of Abilene; Ty Morris, 16, and Seth Biehler, 17, also of Herington, were taken to the Herington hospital following the collision, but no updates were available as of press time.
KHP officials said it was not know if seat belts were in use in the Nissan at the time of the accident, but none of the people in the pickup were wearing safety restraints.
In addition to KHP and LifeTeam members at the scene, members of the Marion County sheriff’s office and Emergency Medical Services were also there.
