Marion County Fair Board introduces baking contest

With the absence of a carnival at this year’s Marion County Fair, set for July 25 through 28, organizers are offering some new activities and events fitting for every member of the family, according to Kelli Savage, fair manager.

One of the newest events is a baking contest sponsored by King Arthur Baking Co., the Marion County Fair Associa­tion, Dale’s Supermarket and Vogt’s Hometown Market, both of Hillsboro, Carlson’s Grocery in Marion, Keith’s Foods in Goessel and Peabody Market in Peabody.

“(The flour company) is looking for the best and most delicious dinner rolls in the adult division (ages 18 and older) and fruit muffins in the junior division (ages 10 to 17),” Savage said.

Participants are encouraged to choose their favorite recipes, which must be made from scratch. The contest is open to all amateur bakers in Marion County.

The only other requirement, in addition to rolls and muffins being made from scratch, is that participants must use the King Arthur brand of flour.

“The flour must be purchased from a Marion County grocery store,” Savage said, “with all entrants required to pay a $2 entry fee, have a receipt with the purchase price circled for King Arthur flour and either an open or empty bag of the flour. No exceptions will be made.”

Each store has a poster with rules attached where the flour will be sold, she said.

Entrants will need to have a copy of the rules to prepare for the baking contest.

Savage said for judging purposes, six dinner rolls or six fruit muffins will be needed.

The baked goods, she said, must be placed on a sturdy paper plate and in a zip-lock bag.

“Prizes will be awarded to the top three finishers in each category,” she said.

In the adult category, gifts certificates to the “Baker’s Cata­logue” will be awarded.

First place is a $75 gift certificate, second place is $50 and third-place winners will receive a cookbook from the sponsoring company.

In the junior category, the top two winners will each receive a $50 gift certificate with the third-place winner receiving a cookbook.

Anyone planning to participate will need to have his or her baked goods at the 4-H building between 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. July 25, Savage said. Judging begins at 11 a.m. that day.

“All winners receive a ribbon and non-winning participants will receive a complimentary dough scraper from the sponsor,” she said.

All prizes, ribbons and non-winning participant awards will be awarded at open-class premium payout from noon to 1 p.m. July 28 in the 4-H Building.

Savage said organizers are hoping bakers will be creative and choose their favorite recipe.

“There are so many possibilities,” she said.
