Florence considers giving lights to ranch

At a short meeting Sept. 17, the Florence City Council discussed what would need to be done before some banks of lights could be donated to Morning Star Ranch.

Morning Star Ranch is a Christian discipleship program operated near Florence by World Impact Inc.

The lights are currently in place at the former football field, which was the first one locally to have been lighted.

Because the field could be put up for sale in the future, removal of the light poles would help clear the way for an upcoming survey.

Councilors agreed to donate the lights and poles as long as they?re removed at no expense or risk to the city. Proof of liability insurance will be required from whoever removes the lights.

In other business, the city council:

  • announced that city employee reviews had been completed. Sanitation employees will receive 3 percent raises and maintenance employees receive a 2 percent raise.

  • decided not to put up signs saying that Florence is zoned because signs already exist saying Marion County is zoned.

  • ?will look into getting a better pool cover so that barrels or inner tubes won?t need to be used to keep the cover above the water?s surface. The pool must be kept at a specific level to keep the cement bottom from buckling while keeping rows of tiles dry to prevent freeze-thaw cycles from loosening or breaking them.

  • asked about the whereabouts of animal-control cages and heard some are available for free public use through the city office. One will be placed near an empty house where skunks have been seen recently.

  • heard that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers inspector would be reinspecting the dike Oct. 15.

  • Congratulated people who helped organize the arts and crafts festivals in Florence as well as other local towns. The festivals seemed to be well attended and the Florence Harvey House even received one visitor from Salina on Saturday.
