The American Red Cross is planning a “Disaster Response Boot Camp” next week in McPherson for people interested in volunteering as disaster volunteers.
Disaster volunteers help prevent, prepare for and respond to emergencies. All training classes are free of charge.
Following is the schedule and course information from the ARC.
• Monday, March 26: “Disaster Services: An Overview,” 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the McPherson County Fire Department, 312 E. Kansas.
This course will provide information about ways participants can help their community prevent, prepare for and respond to emergencies. Participants will also learn about volunteer opportunities.
• Tuesday, March 27: “Disaster Action Team Workshop,” 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the McPherson County Fire Department, 312 E. Kansas.
This course prepares volunteers to participate on the local disaster action team and respond to local emergencies.
• Thursday, March 29: “Shelter Operations,” 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. at First Christian Church, 101 S. Walnut.
This course prepares volunteers to manage shelter operations effectively and sensitively as a team while meeting the needs of people displaced as a result of a disaster.
• Friday, March 30: “Shelter Simulation,” 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., First Christian Church.
Provides volunteers with an opportunity to apply the knowledge, skills and abilities required to operate a successful shelter.
