Goessel council greets new mayor, discusses drilling new water well

The Goessel City Council welcomed Dave Schrag as mayor during its April 15 meeting.

Schrag succeeds Peggy Jay, who chose not to run in the April election. This is Schrag’s second stint as mayor. He served prior to Jay taking office. Larry Schmidt and Larry Lindeman were re-elected in the April 2 election. The council voted to appoint Schmidt as council president.

Jay was briefly present to open the meeting. The council expressed appreciation for Jay’s years of service to the city.

New water well

The council discussed at length the possibility of drilling a new water well. Stuart Porter of Schwab Eaton Engineers was available to discuss the matter with the council.

Commissioners move closer to finalizing building plan

Peabody builder Mel Flaming met with the Marion County Commission Monday to begin finalizing plans for a new 80-foot by 90-foot metal county building that might house departments such as health and zoning and also store county records.

Commissioners said the structure, which would be built in the vicinity of the county jail, would also provide space for garaging county machinery now housed in space owned by Cooperative Grain & Supply in Hillsboro.

The building, which would house climate-controlled office spaces and restrooms, would also include high shelving units, wide aisles and garage doors for forklift operation.

Flaming and Commission Chairman Randy Dallke are expected to continue bring a completed plan to commission meetings...

Patrons drive for their school

Hillsboro Ford hosted its annual “Drive One 4UR School” event Saturday at the dealership located at Main and A streets. The event, co-sponsored with Ford Motor Co., invites patrons to take a free test-drive of a new Ford vehicle. For every test drive, Ford makes a donation toward the designated school. Funds raised have gone to support the Hillsboro High School Booster Club. In addition to test drives, patrons could indulge in a free hot dog lunch. Marion council OKs $4.2 million in bonds for housing project

Marion’s $4.2 million IRB project will go toward the renovation of 20 apartments and construction of nine duplexes. The Marion City Council, by a vote of 3-1 with one abstention, adopted a resolution April 15 indicating intent to issue $4.2 million in industrial revenue bonds for the renovation of 20 apartments and construction of nine new duplexes.

City Administrator Doug Kjellin said the improvements will be at September I Housing, 1500 E. Main St.

“September I has 20 units that will be renovated, with seven of which not being rented at all right now,” he said, because the living conditions are unsuitable.

“September II is not being considered in this program and Victory Plaza Addition (across from the football field) has one duplex built and is anticipating another nine duplexes, which would be 18 more units.”
