Florence council plans to check city infrastructure

The Florence City Council worked on creating a plan for infrastructure evaluation at its June 4 meeting.Councilor Randy Mills offered to volunteer his time, equipment and fuel to help clean storm drains and inspect culverts. Local contractors will be used when additional help is needed.

Russ Hamm and Brenden Nafziger were binding wheat at the Goessel Engine Club grounds Saturday. With weather conditions making for a thin crop to harvest, they hope to get a couple bundle racks full for the Goessel Threshing Days. This year’s festival will be Aug. 3-5.
County-wide recycling on the horizon, Schmidt says

Rollin Schmidt expects Marion County to have a recycling program available to all residents in the next few years. Any community in the future may be sorry it doesn’t have a landfill, he said, to get in on the income that can be mined from it. The county may want to open the remaining 160 acres at the old landfill some day to get in on future commercial advantages. Rollin Schmidt believes Marion County will have county-wide recycling of solid waste materials within the next few years, and perhaps very soon.

Goessel council hears offer to mow lawn

City Clerk Anita Goertzen informed the Goessel City Council at its May 21 meeting that resident Jimmy McGuire and his son had offered to mow the Cedar Street cemetery, across the street from the city building.The council expressed appreciation to the McGuires for their work. The council also discussed replacing the cemetery fence. Options were considered, but no decision was made.
Goertzen pointed out that this is the oldest cemetery in the Goessel community and belongs to the southern district of the Mennonite Brethren Church.
On another matter, the council discussed the public works position, which is currently open and is being filled with temporary help.

Commissioners consider forming public building commission

The Marion County Commission Monday spoke by tele-conference with bond representatives, while examining papers the same consultants sent for creating a county public-building commission to build a jail.Commissioners estimated the jail, or community corrections center, would be built after perhaps winning public approval to finance bonds in the general election of November 2008. Law Kingdon Inc. of Wichita is working on plans for a facility.
