Organizers deem first lake paddle-boat race a success

Maggie and Robert Nichols, co-coordinators, said they were expecting maybe five paddle boats total, but when nine teams of two registered, they were pleased.
“This year,” Nichols said, “we just wanted to get the event off the ground. Next year we are hoping to expand the competition to include canoes, kayaks and an obstacle course.”

Stick-horse race to debut at ‘Day on the Farm’

This stick-horse race will probably be most appealing to children, but adults with an expertise in riding stick horses are welcome to compete.
Participants are encouraged to bring their own stick horses. Additional ones will be available, although event organizers are not guaranteeing the speed or stamina of those steeds.
Women and girls who come to watch the derby are also encouraged to wear “Derby hats.”
Day on the Farm is an activity for families, especially grandparents and grandchildren, held on the Duerksen/Knepp farm northeast of Goessel from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m.

Burdick making plans for Labor Day event

“iHeart Burdick: Sharing 125 Years of Memories” is the theme for this year’s 40th annual Labor Day celebration Sept. 2 and 3. This year’s event will commemorate Burdick’s 125th birthday.The traditional Sunday 9:30 a.m. worship service will be led by J.J. Beck, pastor of the Burdick United Methodist Church. He will be assisted by Bill Peterson, pastor of the Hebron Lutheran Church.
The service will be at the tennis courts. Everyone is encouraged to bring lawn chairs.
Sunday evening, Johnny-Red-Eye and Nare-do-wells, who play rock-a-billy and classic country music, will perform starting at 7:30. The Methodist congregation will sell homemade ice cream after the performance.

Legacy Quartet in area Aug. 18-19

Legacy Quartet from Denver, Colo., is returning to this area for three concerts Aug. 18 and 19.
The group will sing at 7 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 18, at the Koerner Heights Church, 320 Meridian Ave., Newton. On Sunday, Aug. 19, Legacy will sing at 10 a.m. at Gospel Assembly Church, 4220 N. Oliver, Wichita, and then at 3 p.m. at the Pine Village Retirement Community, 86 22nd Ave., Moundridge.
Formed in 1981, Legacy has performed in Korea, Australia, Cuba, Canada and venues across the central and western United States. The group’s unique harmony, variety, depth and the meaning of their songs has created a loyal audience.
Group members are Doug Filter, tenor; Mitch Rogge, lead; Steve Taylor, baritone; and Norm Huxman, bass.
