Longest Walk 2 to pass through this county

After traveling on foot more than 1,500 miles from San Francisco, the Northern Route of the Longest Walk 2 was scheduled to arrive in Kansas Tues­day, April 8, as participants continue their journey across the nation.

The Northern Route will follow U.S. Highway 50 into Syracuse from Colorado, and participants will then be hosted by Kansans across the state through April.

The Longest Walk 2 began Feb. 11 to bring attention to the environmental disharmony of Mother Earth, sacred site issues, and to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the original longest walk.

Longest Walk 2 participants are carrying out simultaneous north and south routes that together combine more than 6,000 miles across the country.

Dickinson commissioners visit about bridge with MC cohorts

By tradition, Marion County has been responsible for taking care of a bridge in Dickinson County, and that fact earned the Marion County Commission a visit from the Dickinson County Commission at the regular commission meeting Monday.

Acting Road and Bridge Director John Summerville has been puzzling over what to do about the bridge, No. 40 on the county roll, going over the headwaters of Lyon Creek on 370th west of Sunflower Road heading to Remington Road.

The three-ton weight limit “crooked” bridge actually is in Dickinson County, but “due to the offset of the road,” by agreement in 1978 and prior years, Marion County is responsible for its inspection and maintenance.

Union Pacific to reopen railroad crossing

City Administrator David Mayfield announced at the March 24 Marion City Council meeting that the Union Pacific Railroad has agreed to open the railroad crossing in the Jex Addition that will again route semi-trucks renting parking space on land owned by Daryl Brewer away from housing.

The railroad closed the crossing, it said, because of higher train counts and speeds that increased the chances of accidents. The closing sparked protests from Jex residents who didn’t like resulting truck traffic on their street.

Mayfield said City Attorney Dan Baldwin wrote a letter to the railroad about the matter, and the railroad replied it would open the crossing on Friday or Monday. It still hadn’t done so by late Monday, and Mayfield said a...

Goessel council previews gift for 'sister city' visitors

Goessel City Clerk Anita Goertzen showed the city council the gift that will be presented to representatives of Goessel’s “sister city” in Poland, the birthplace of Captain Kurt von Goessel. The city of Goessel is named after von Goessel.

Henryk Damojski and one other person plan to arrive April 13. The gift from the city of Goessel is a quilted wall hanging that depicts scenes from Goessel, such as the importance of wheat and churches.

In his report to the council, Police Chief Joe Base said the department processed the theft of a vehicle, vandalism at the grocery store, one domestic call, one protection from abuse complaint, one suspicious person, stalking complaints, four arrests on warrants, multiple curfew warnings, one...
