Goessel 4-H Club meets in April

On Monday, April 7, the Goessel Goal Getters 4-H club met for their monthly meeting.

This meeting was the model meeting, when representatives from another club came to judge us on how we ran our meeting.

4-Hers were asked to name their favorite beverage for roll call. Talks were given by Grady Stultz, Laird Goertzen, and Anthony Esau. Grady talked to us about marketing goats, Laird gave us an interesting history of woodworking, and Anthony creatively rounded the talks off with talking to...

Two Marion County seniors feted by Newman

Two students from Marion County were among the 32 top academic high school students Newman University hosted on April 25 during the university’s “First Class Jets” recognition program.

Students and families from Kansas, Nebraska, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas gathered on the Newman campus in Wichita to be honored for their achievements and prepare for fall classes.

Attending from Marion County were Meghan Jost, a senior at Hillsboro High School, and Kristine Jirak, a Centre High School senior from Tampa.

Jost received the Cardinal John Henry Newman Scholar­ship while Jirak received the Presidential Scholarship.

Tampa fire department acquires new tanker truck

Barnett’s radon bill headed for governor’s desk for signature

Sen. Jim Barnett (R-Emporia) announced today that legislation he introduced on Feb. 7, 2008, has passed in both the Senate and the House of Representatives and will soon be presented to Gov. Kathleen Sebelius for her signature.

Radon, a class-A human carcinogen, is the leading cause of lung cancer in non-smokers and the second leading cause overall. Radon gas doesn’t discriminate: it is equally dangerous to all people, regardless of weight, sex, race, or age.

However, the very young, the elderly, and those with a weakened immune system are particularly at risk from the effects of radon.

By using conservative estimates, 200 Kansans die every year from radon-induced lung cancer. A majority of Kansas counties have potential high...
