Surveying to begin for roundabout

Surveyors for the Kansas Department of Transportation will be conducting survey work starting today along U.S. Highway 77 at the intersection of U.S. 77, U.S. 56 and Kansas 150 highways in Marion County.The purpose is to gather information needed for the detailed design of a proposed roundabout east of the city of Marion. The survey is scheduled for completion on or about Oct. 5, weather permitting.

Commissioners frustrated with radio-tower delay

Delays in installing a 90-foot-plus emergency communications tower at the new Marion County jail may cost the county many thousands of dollars, plus interfere with law enforcement and emergency efficiency, county officials are saying.County commissioners at their weekly meeting Monday said they are upset and frustrated with the four citizens with an attorney who have been allowed to delay the installation.
In spite of their frustration, the commissioners were pleased that about 500 citizens came out for tours of the new jail last weekend with many pleased remarks.
Commissioner Randy Dallke said he is dismayed the county can be forced to keep the emergency communications center in the old jail open an extra year.

Six Appeal generates fan appeal at Florence

Members of the a capella vocal band Six Appeal move to the music during their Saturday evening concert on the Main Street stage at the Florence Labor Day Celebration. About 300 people turned out for the two-hour concert by the Minnesota-based group that includes Marion native Michael Brookens (far right in the above photo). The group injected humor and choreographed moves to go with their upbeat contemporary songs from the past few decades. A standing ovation at the end prompted one last number to the delight of their audience.
County reports record sales tax

During Friday’s payday meeting, Marion County commissioners heard County Clerk Carol Maggard report record-sales-tax revenue in August.Revenue of $71,568 in regular sales tax, and $63,470 in special jail-bond sales tax was due to sales occurring during June, collected by the state in July, and distributed in August.
The commissioners said jail sales tax collections have put them close to the total necessary to make the bond payments both for this year and next year.
