Goessel council hears offer to mow lawn

City Clerk Anita Goertzen informed the Goessel City Council at its May 21 meeting that resident Jimmy McGuire and his son had offered to mow the Cedar Street cemetery, across the street from the city building.The council expressed appreciation to the McGuires for their work. The council also discussed replacing the cemetery fence. Options were considered, but no decision was made.
Goertzen pointed out that this is the oldest cemetery in the Goessel community and belongs to the southern district of the Mennonite Brethren Church.
On another matter, the council discussed the public works position, which is currently open and is being filled with temporary help.

Commissioners consider forming public building commission

The Marion County Commission Monday spoke by tele-conference with bond representatives, while examining papers the same consultants sent for creating a county public-building commission to build a jail.Commissioners estimated the jail, or community corrections center, would be built after perhaps winning public approval to finance bonds in the general election of November 2008. Law Kingdon Inc. of Wichita is working on plans for a facility.
David Arteberry, bond consultant with George K. Baum & Co., told commissioners the outline papers they were looking at for a public-building commission are “just an attempt to get the ball rolling.

Marion council moves on street projects

The Marion City Council Monday approved proceeding with development of a contract with the engineering firm of Kirkham-Michael that could begin somewhere close to a million dollars of street construction.The projects probably will include Eisenhower, North Cedar and petitioned-for projects, perhaps three of them.
Jon Halbewachs of Kirkham-Michael recommended widening and deepening the ditches along Eisenhower to control water problems instead of installing curbing and guttering, but even that plus resurfacing the street could be close to a half-million dollars, nearly two years long project. The council agreed that North Cedar already is breaking down from truck traffic entering town.

Wedding-dress exhibit opens at Mennonite Heritage Museum

A new exhibit at the Mennonite Heritage Museum in Goessel features wedding dresses. Eight dresses are displayed, the oldest worn in 1900 and the “newest” in 1956.Sarah Schroeder wore her two-piece black wedding dress when she married Heinrich J. S. Schmidt in 1900. Their wedding photo is included in the book “Clothing and Textile Collections in the United States” by Sally Queen and Vicki L. Berger.
Elisabeth Richert’s long-sleeved dress had tucks and lace and was worn Nov. 26, 1910, when she married Heinrich D. Epp.
Helena Duerksen’s dress, made of cashmere and wool, was stitched by Mrs. Daniel Unger, well-known seamstress from Hillsboro. It was worn twice, when she married Henry J. Warkentin on Oct. 27, 1911...
