Don Bezdek

Don Bezdek, 64, boat repairman, died March 13 at Robert J. Dole V.A. Medical Center in Wichita.

The service was held March 16 at Hillsboro United Methodist Church with Nancy Douglas officiating. Burial was at Haven of Rest Cemetery in rural Hillsboro.

He was born June 3, 1942, to Mike and Georgia (Urbanek) Bezdek in Marion. On May 1, 1961, he was married to Irene Brunner, who survives in Hillsboro.

He is also survived by two daughters, Lisa and Mike Salsgiver of Wichita and Angela Bezdek Larsen of Salina; and three grandchildren.

Memorials have been established with the V.A. Hospital and the Hillsboro American Legion Flag Lighting Fund in care of Jost Funeral Home.



Marie Kusnefsky


Mari T. Kusnefsky, 95, former teacher, died March 14 at Golden Living Center in Marion.

Vigil service was held Sunday, March 18, at Zeiner Funeral Home in Marion. Inurnment will be at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Newton.

She was born July 11, 1911, to Geoerge and Anna (Bucker) Horne in Garfield Township of Bay County, Mich. On Jan. 31, 1942, she was married to Paul Kusnefsky, who preceded her in death in 1987.

A memorial fund has been established for the Listening System Fund at Holy Family Parish in care of Zeiner Funeral Home.



Thelma McClure

Thelma Z. (Hanekey) McClure, 83, died March 18 at Hillsboro community Medical Center, special Care Unit.

The service will be at 2 p.m. Friday, March 23 at Baker Funeral Home in Peabody. Interment will be at Prairie Lawn Cemetary in Peabody.

Visitation will be 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, March 22, with the family present from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jay, and two sisters, Elizabeth Singer and Vivan Delling.

Survivors include two daughters, Christa Lalouette-Hett and husband Mick of Marion, and Maylene Ashton and husband Bob of Denver, Colo.; two sisters, Nester McWilliams of Kerrville, Texas, and Margaret Beason of Malta, Idaho; four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.


Eva Jane Miller

Eva Jane Miller, 81, died March 10 in Lost Springs.

The service was held March 14 at Lost Springs Cemetery with Devin Wendt officiating.

She was born Dec. 18, 1925, to William H. and Mary (Ramsey) Hailey in Hymer. In 1944, she was married to John Varelman, who died in 1971. On Jan. 21 1973, she was married to W.O. “Rusty” Miller, who died in 1995.

She is survived by two sons, John W. Varelman of Lost Springs and Jerry Varelman of Lake Arrowhead, Texas; a daughter, Joyce Flood of Norman, Ark.; two sisters, Dottie Olsen of Logan, Ind., and Ruthie Sollner of Burdick; a brother, Alvin Hailey of Elmdale; 13 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren and 11 great-great-grandchildren.

A memorial has been established with Herington Municipal Hospital in care of Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home, Herington Chapel of Herington.



James Regier


James Eldon Regier, 76, U.S. Army veteran and city lineman, died March 16 at Select Specialty Hospital of St. Francis in Wichita.

The service is at 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 20 at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church of Newton with Father Floyd McKinney officiating.

Burial will be in Restlawn Garden of Memories in Newton.

He was born July 5, 1930, to John L.W. and Marie (Ewert) Regier in Hillsboro. On Aug. 5, 1960, he was married to Joyce Ollek. On Mary 2, 1981, he was married to Marion Wiesner, who survives.

He is also survived by son John Regier and wife Diane of Newton; two daughters, Michelle Duerksen and husband Rodean and Melissa Lawrence and husband Dane, all of Newton; two sisters, Georgie Ann Schmidet of North Newton and Eulalia Flaming and husband Jim of Hillsboro; and 11 grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established with Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church and the American Lung Association.



Alice Schneider


Alice Faye Schneider, 91, died March 13 at Medical Lodges of Herington.

The service was held March 16 at the St. John Lutheran Church of Lincolnville with Alan Stahlecker officiating. Burial was at Lewis Cemetery in Ramona.

She was born Feb. 15, 1916, to Henry and Clara (Moot) Bliss near Elmo. On May 12, 1935, she was married to Alex Schneider, who died in 1986.

She is survived by four sons, Darrel of Gravette, Ark., and Galen and Pat, Lonnie and Jean and Gary and Jayann, all of Herington; two daughters, Betty and Myron Klein of Lincolnville and Karen and Dennis Wendlandt of Herington; three brothers, Maurice, Alvin and and Jimmy Bliss, all of Haysville; four sisters, Ruby Pschigoda of Hillsboro, Helen Sader of Herington, Luella Tong of Augusta and Sharen Brunner of California; 23 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

A memorial has been established with St. John Lutheran Church in care of Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home, Herington Chapel of Herington.



Thelma Westbrook


Thelma I. Westbrook, 100, died March 13 at Lexington Park Nursing Facility in Topeka.

The service was held March 17 at Canton Township Cemetery with Marion Walker officiating.

She was born Jan. 20, 1907, to George and Ruby Belle (Norton) Merrick in Western, Neb. On May 16, 1931, she was married to Benjamin F. Westbrook, who died in 1958.

She is survived by two daughters, Gay M. Anderson of Mankato and Benna K. Wasson of Maple Hill; four grandchildren and four great-greatchildren.

A memorial has been established with Heart of America Hospice in care of Olson’s Mortuary in Canton.
