Congratulations to those responsible for the "new" Marion County Fair parade route down Main Street
Old timers in Hillsboro-and some not-so-old timers-will remember the days when the Marion County Fair parade took a Main Street route. Then, in the 1980s, the Kansas Department of Transportation would not allow the parade to stop traffic on the official U.S. Highway 56 detour (now D Street). The route was changed to Grand Avenue. But, now, it's back where it belongs.
Response to the move was favorable, according to Alvin Hett, the parade coordinator. It gave the event a new look and addressed some of the safety concerns of the police department. The use of the former AMPI parking lot as a starting point alleviated some of the congestion. It also satisfied some of the those who have always believed the parade should be a Main Street event.
