Historical Society

holds fund-raiser

The Hillsboro Historical Society held its annual fund-raising dinner on March 21 in the activity center at Parkview Mennonite Brethren Church.

About 230 people attended the fund-raiser. The event raised about $2,000, which will go toward the operations of the Historical Society.

The guest speaker, was David Kendall, executive producer and host of "Sunflower Journeys" a KTPS-TV program aired on Channel 8.

"He did a very nice job," said Peggy Goertzen, vice chair of the Hillsboro Historical Society and Museum.

"In his program, he chose selected segments that had connections with Marion County."

The program brochure for the evening featured a sketch of the Schaeffler House in honor of the home's recognition as a national historic landmark.

"The Parkview women catered our meal and did a wonderful job," Goertzen said.

The entertainment included five musical numbers by Bob Delk, Eugene Just, Rod Just and Dan Carlson.

"It was very, very nice," Goertzen said of the musical presentation.

"And we also announced we will have our first spring historic-home tour on May 4."

Hand-bell choirs

to perform March 30

The Peabody United Methodist Church will present a musical program featuring the adult and youth hand-bell choirs at 4 p.m., Sunday, March 30, at 403 N. Sycamore St.

Pastor Betty Partridge of Wichita will dedicate the new bells given as memorials to the church.

The public is invited.

MOPS scheduled

to meet April 8

MOPS will meet from 9 a.m. to 11:15 a.m., Tuesday, April 8, at Parkview Mennonite Brethren Church in Hillsboro.

The guest speaker will be Gina Nachtigal, who will talk about the "Friendships of Women."

The featured craft will be to stamp friendship-themed cards.

New mothers are welcome to attend free of charge for their first visit.

Childcare is provided for mothers who attend the sessions.

Chamber will host

luncheon April 2

The Hillsboro Chamber of Commerce invites the local business community to a membership luncheon at noon, Wednesday, April 2, at the city building.

The cost of the luncheon is $5 per person.

The guest speaker will be Scott Seier, director of summer operations at Mid America Youth Basketball in Newton. Seier will speak about the economic impact of a large sporting event for a community.

"Anyone is welcome to attend," said Joel Klaassen, chamber president.

Spring Fling plans

made in Florence

The Florence Labor Day Committee met March 23 at the Florence Ambulance building and finalized plans for the Spring Fling celebration.

Spring Fling will begin with entertainment at 3 p.m., Sunday, April 6. A meal will be served at 4 p.m. at Veteran's Park. The cost of the meal will be a free-will offering.

The committee also worked on plans for Labor Day.

The theme for the Labor Day celebration is "Florence, More Than a Whistlestop."

Pinewood and soapbox derby displays will be made available to the public and will include regulations, rules and entry forms.

Entry forms to vote for the winning Labor Day button are available at area businesses in Florence and Marion. The forms can also be obtained under the events section on the Website at Florenceks.com. Evening MOPS set

to meet April 11

The regular meeting of evening MOPS will be held at 7 p.m., Tuesday, April 11, at Parkview Mennonite Brethren Church in Hillsboro.

The scheduled information session will be presented by the Hillsboro Police Department and the Marion County Health Department. They will talk about the danger of strangers, child safety and car-seat safety.

New mothers are welcome to attend free of charge for their first visit.

Childcare is provided for mothers who attend the sessions.
