The Hillsboro and Marion golf teams shared titles once again, this time
at the seven-school Sacred Heart Invitational on Friday in Salina.
Hillsboro won the two-man title and was second in the four-man
race. Marion was the runner-up in two-man and won the four-man
championship.

Hillsboro’s Elliott Soyez and Justin Kent topped the individual list with a 74 and 77, respectively. Daniel Kunantaev was fourth at 78.
Soyez teamed with Kunantaev to form Hillsboro’s winning two-man score while Kent and Darren Enns (91) contributed to the four-man total.
“Although we are not pleased with finishing second (in four-man), we are making some progress,” said Hillsboro coach Scott O’Hare. “For the first time this season, we did have our top three all shoot in the 70s. That is something we have been expecting to do and should do.
“Elliott played a very solid round at four over par, and Justin finally bounced back after having a couple of tournaments where he shot scores much higher than he should be at this point. It is also nice to see Daniel playing so well his freshman season.”
Meanwhile, Marion’s Travis Hett (77) placed third overall, Luke Gordon (80) fifth, Jake Bredemeier fifth (81) and Keith Jones sixth (81).
Hett and Jones competed as Marion’s two-man team with Bredemeier and Jones joining in on the four-man score.
“I was pleased with the team score,” coach Rex Ostmeyer said. “I want to shoot sub-320 every meet. If we do, I feel that we played as we are capable.”
But Ostmeyer also sees room for improvement.
“Consistency is the key for us, especially in the middle of our order,” he said. “Our 2 through 4 are all capable of shooting in the 70s, but they need to be consistently in the low 80s.”
Bennington—Hillsboro won the weather-abbreviated nine-team Bennington Invitational on April 24. The Trojans combined for a score of 171 over nine holes to beat Clay Center by four strokes.
Ty Kissinger of Clay Center took individual honors with a score of 37. Elliott Soyez of HHS was second with a 38, Daniel Kunantaev fourth at 40 and Justin Kent also earned a medal by finishing 12th at 45.
Also competing for HHS were Darren Enns (48), Zach Magnuson (49) and Daniel Dick (54).
“Although it was nice to bring home the team championship, our team score was not that good on the front nine,” said coach Scott O’Hare. “Most of the guys were playing much better on the back nine before the storms moved in. I would have liked to have seen how we would finish.”
Junior varsity—Hillsboro hosted a junior varsity meet on Friday. Daniel Miller placed fifth overall for the Trojans with a 48 over nine holes.
Also competing for HHS were Jake Kenney (49), Evan Just (55), Alex Jost and Josh Garrett (79).
Lindsay Hett of Marion won medalist honors with a 45. Matt Fine also competed for Marion and finished at 60.
Coming—Hillsboro was scheduled to compete at the Hesston Invitational on Tuesday, then will co-host the 36-hole Marion County Invitational with Marion High on Friday.
The unique format of Friday’s event will have half the field play 18 holes at Hillsboro or Marion’s course in the morning, then play 18 holes at the other course in the afternoon.
Tee-off is set for 8 a.m.
