Inital estimate for roof repairs come in ‘scary’ PDF Print E-mail

The Hillsboro City Council received some sobering information at its May 17 meeting about the projected costs of bringing the roofs at the former AMPI building and city hall to proper maintenance.

The city had asked Wray Roofing Inc. from North Newton to inspect the city-owned facility at Ash and Third streets. USD 410 is considering renting 14,300 square feet of the building to house its central office, transportation and maintenance services.

The company prepared a diagram of the expansive structure that identified various components of the roof. A total of just over 28,000 square feet of roof rated a “poor” or “fair-poor” evaluation with a repair estimate of $135,272.

In addition, the company’s estimate to repair a 5,800-square-foot section at city hall was $11,669.

“That scares me a little bit,” said Shane Marler, in his first meeting as a council member.

“It scares me that we have so many roofs in bad shape,” echoed Mayor Delores Dalke.

The council deferred action on the report and its recommendation in order to give the matter further thought.

In other action, the council:

  • witnessed the swearing in of the reelected Mayor Dalke and newly elected council members Robert Watson and Marler at the start of the meeting.
  • elected Councilor Byron McCarty as chairman of the Public Building Commission.
  • deferred to its May 1 meeting a decision about where to locate the carnival at this year’s Marion County Fair.
The primary options are locating it on D Street adjacent to the fairgrounds, or in the parking area between D Street and Memorial Field. Either option would require the temporary partial closing of the four-lane street.
  • deferred action on whether to buy a $65 jacket for each member of the Hillsboro ambulance crew, as requested.
Council members said they might have a better handle on the city’s budget situation by then.
  • approved a pay estimate of $55,665 from APAC-Kansas for work completed on the Adams Street project, and an invoice for $990 from Ranson Financial Consultants for $990 for services rendered in connection with the project.
  • approved a contract with Reiss & Goodness Engineers for preliminary work to be done regarding repairs to North Ash Street.
  • agreed to have Stutzman Refuse Disposal remove construction and demolition waste collected during this month’s city-wide Clean-up Week. The company’s per-ton rate was comparable to the county transfer station’s, and Stutzman would do the hauling.
  • commissioned the city’s planning commission to review the regulations determining the sale of alcoholic and cereal malt beverages within the city.
A local eating establishment had inquired about the possibility serving alcoholic beverages, according to the mayor.
  • approved the mayor’s appointment of Mary Regier to the Museums Advisory Board.
  • discussed but took no action on policies regarding snow removal, excessive noise, the use of city-owned safety equipment by private contractors and banning smoking in city-owned buildings.
