Competing in one of its toughest tournaments of the season, the Hillsboro High golf team finished eighth at the Wichita Collegiate Invitational on Friday.

Played on the challenging Hidden Lakes course in Wichita, the tournament field included some of the top teams in class 3A, 4A and 5A.

The host team captured the team title with a 304, followed by Buhler (304), Andover (313), Andover Central (314), Augusta (320), Valley Center (321), Wichita Trinity (323), Hillsboro (328), Marion (333), Goddard (338), Hesston (346) and Wellington (377).

Hillsboro freshman Daniel Kunantaev placed fifth on the individual list with a 75, three strokes off the top score. Elliott Soyez tied for 14th with a 78.

Also competing for Hillsboro were Justin Kent (86), Darren Enns (89), Zach Magnuson (98) and Daniel Dick (109).

“Justin Kent had one of his most disappointing rounds of the season following his win at Hillsboro (the previous week), but I don’t expect that to hinder his progress this season,”coach Scott O’Hare said.

“He just had one of those days where things simply didn’t click.”

O’Hare said he was pleased to see Enns break 90, especially on a challenging course.

“He has been on the bubble of breaking 90 the past two seasons,” O’Hare said of the senior. “I am hoping this will be a confidence boost for him. If he can continue to improve and get some consistency in shooting in the 80s, we could be a very strong team the last part of the season.”

Travis Hett led Marion’s team with an 81. Right behind him were Luke Gordon (82) and Jake Bredemeier (83) with Keith Jones (87) and Chase Carlson (93) rounding out the team score.

Junior varsity—Daniel Kunantaev won the Hesston junior varsity tournament the day before Friday’s invitational at Wichita, shooting a 76.

Goessel’s Derek Brown carded an 84 for sixth place and a medal, while Luke Gordon led Marion with a 91 for 16th.

At a nine-hole Marion JV tournament April 17, Daniel Miller led HHS with a 52, which was good for 15th place and a medal. Paul Hodson led Marion with a 48, which put him sixth.

Coming—Hillsboro was scheduled compete at the Bennington Invitational on Tuesday and will be in action again on Friday at the Sacred Heart Invitational in Salina. Tee off in Salina is 9 a.m.
