The Free Press
The Marion High girls’ track squad made the most of favorable weather this weekend by sending a cadre of its top performers to the KU Relays.
“Our girls really performed well,” coach Grant Thierolf said.
“All of our girls looked like they really belonged at this caliber of meet and really represented Marion High School quite well.”

Three relay teams posted school-record times. Running against high schools across Kansas, the Warriors finished fourth in their 4x100 heat.

Kayley Heerey, Kristen Steinborn, Julia Zeiner and Erin Carr completed the race in under 51 seconds, and the same quartet finished the 4x200 in a fraction more than 1:49.

Camille Christensen, Zeiner, Amanda Richmond and Danielle Cope ran the distance medley event in 13:43.

“The distance medley team ran a tough race against an outstanding field,” Thierolf said.

He said the Warriors also performed well individually. Erin Richmond threw the javelin 111 feet, 8 inches.

Erin Carr ran the 100 meters in 12.66 seconds.

“(Carr) ran a great race and placed a very respectable 19th out of 40 sprinters in a loaded field,” Thierolf said.

Freshman Julia Zeiner placed third in her flight in the long jump by leaping 17-61⁄4 inches.

“That is a new school record, and a fantastic jump for a freshman,” Thierolf said.

Coming—Marion track and field team went on the road Monday to participate in the Smoky Valley Invitational previously slated for April 13.

On Tuesday, the CKTL came to Marion for a quint.

On Friday, a split squad will compete at both the James Thomas Invitational in Hillsboro and the Beloit Relays.
