The Goessel High track and field teams traveled to Tescott for the Bennington Invitational last week.

The girls finished fourth out of seven teams.

“Our girls continue to improve each meet and set some great standards,” coach Sandy Banman said.

Top performances came from Tricia Fensky, won the pole vault (8 feet even), and Aspen Frey, who won the mile (5 minutes, 15 seconds).

The 4x800 relay team (11:48) trimmed 37 seconds from its previous best and finished third.

The 4x400 team (4:44) finished in second place, 12 seconds better than its previous mark.

The team benefitted from three second-place finishes: Kylee Nikkel (33-4) in the shot put, Kristen Hoffman (13:31) in the 3,200 and Frey (1:07) in the 400.

On Friday, Garrett Hiebert stopped at the KU Relays long enough to throw the javelin 185-4 before joining the boys’ team at Bennington. Hiebert paced the boys to a second-place team finish behind the Clifton-Clyde team.

“We had numerous top-three finishes and personal records set today,” coach Vanessa Schroeder said.

Hiebert set a school record with a first-place triple jump (43-91⁄4), and Goessel grabbed first place in four other events.

Craig Banman won the pole vault (12-6) and Brett Goerzen (12-0) finished second. Goerzen won the long jump (18-71⁄4 ) and Goessel took the top spot in both the 4x100 and 4x400 relays.
