Wet and chilly weather abbreviated a five-team Central Kansas Track League meet at Hesston on Tuesday.

Suspended with nine of 18 events completed, the Hillsboro girls were in first place and the Hillsboro boys were in second.

“Obviously, the biggest factor today was the poor weather, but there is a time that you just have to give the meet a try,” Hillsboro coach Dennis Boldt said. “We got in most of the field events prior to weather finally taking its toll.

“The athletes did a great job despite the conditions, but we always have to keep in mind the health and safety of the athletes.”

Led by double wins from both Chelsea Bebermeyer and Hannah Marsh, the girls finished with 70 points, followed by Hesston with 52, Berean Academy 43, Leon 17 and Canton-Galva 5.

Bebermeyer won the discus with a throw of 104 feet, 5 inches, and the shot put at 33-41⁄2. Marsh won the long jump with a leap of 16-0 and the pole vault by clearing 8-6.

JuliAnne Chisholm won Hillsboro’s other gold medal by clearing 5-7 in the high jump.

Also scoring for HHS were: Wendy McCarty, second in javelin (99-0) and third in shot put (29-9); Tiffany Rooker, second in pole vault (7-6); Abi Humber, second in triple jump (30-71⁄2); Jet Skiles, third in pole vault (7-0); and Anna Woelk, fourth in high jump (4-4).

The 4x800 relay team of Clara Ens, Elissa Richert, Cassie Kroeker and Jessica Elliot placed fourth (12 minutes, 17.6 seconds).

For the boys, gold medals by Jacob Yoder and Adam Dirks paced HHS to second place with 44 points. Hesston won with 66 points, followed by Berean with 28, Canton-Galva 7 and Leon 2.

Yoder won the long jump with a leap of 19-9 and Dirks paced a 1-2-3-4 HHS finish in the javelin with a throw of 158-01. Yoder was second (153-11), Spencer Brown third (121-4) and Michael Scheele fourth (108-4).

Also scoring for HHS were: John Hein, third in shot put (38-81⁄4); Nathan Vogel, fourth in high jump (5-2); Tyler Kaufman, third in triple jump (39-5); Johnathan Christian, third in the 3,200 meter run (11:21.8); and Matt Klenda, fifth in the 3,200 (12:01.4).

The HHS 4x800 team of Nicholas Mueller, Vogel, Sean Leihy and Cody McMillen placed second (time not reported).

Coming—Hillsboro was scheduled to compete in a CTKL meet at Sterling on Tuesday, then will compete in its first large invitational of the year: the Conrad Nightingale Invitational at Halstead.

Events begin at 3 p.m.
