This week, the Tabor College softball team played doubleheaders against Sterling and Southwestern, but is still in search of its first win of the season. A doubleheader at Bethany scheduled for Saturday was postponed.

Southwestern —In Game 1 on Thursday, the Bluejays jumped to a 3-0 lead in the third inning.

But the Moundbuilders picked up single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings en route to a 5-4 win in eight innings.

“We played our best game of the year,” coach Steve Berg said. “Our team came ready to play, turning two double plays in the first two innings. But we let the game slip away with missed opportunities in the seventh and eighth innings.”

In the third inning, Clancey Kelley was called out on strikes to start the frame, but Stephanie Regrut worked her way to first with her second walk of the game.

April Funk followed with a double, and Danielle Goossen singled to drive in the game’s first run.

Goossen stole second; she and Funk scored on a single by AubreyWhitehorn two hitters later, and the inning ended with Tabor holding the lead.

Southwestern loaded the bases before Tabor recorded an out, but the Moundbuilders managed only a single and one run in the frame.

Tabor defenders tracked down three fly-outs to leave the bases loaded.

In the fourth, and Southwestern parlayed a one-out triple by Rodgers into its second score of the game.

The Bluejays came within 65 feet of winning their first of the season in the bottom of the seventh.

Erin Wiebe led off the inning with a double and advanced to third three batters later.

Kelley struck out looking for the second time and finished 0-for-4 on the day, and Regrut reached first on her third walk of the day.

Funk loaded the bases with a single—her fourth hit in four trips to the plate—and Goossen came to the plate.

The Bluejay third baseman lifted a pitch into left field. But Southwestern’s Katie Burrow made the catch and her throw was sharp enough to cut the tagging runner down.

Southwestern scored twice in the top of the eighth, and Tabor came up a run short in the bottom half.

In Game 2, Southwestern sent six batters to the plate in the opening inning and staked a 2-0 lead on its way to 12 runs on 16 hits.

Tabor went in order in the bottom half of each of the first three innings and managed three runs on five hits the rest of the way.

Southwestern erupted for six hits and five runs in the top of the third, effectively putting the game out of reach.

Sterling—The Warriors won both ends of their doubleheader Wednesday by a combined score of 23-3.

In the first game, Danielle Goossen went 3-for-4 and scored one of Tabor’s runs in a 13-2 loss. Clancey Kelley went 2-for-3 in the second game and scored Tabor’s only run in a 10-1 loss.

Coming—Tabor played at Ottawa on Monday, with results unavailable at press time.

Tabor’s next game, and its final home date of the season, will be played against Saint Mary on April 24.
